The miR-290-295 cluster as multi-faceted players in mouse embryonic stem cells

open access: yesCell & Bioscience, 2017
Increasing evidence indicates that embryonic stem cell specific microRNAs (miRNAs) play an essential role in the early development of embryo. Among them, the miR-290-295 cluster is the most highly expressed in the mouse embryonic stem cells and involved ...

A Vascularized Microphysiological System Reproducing Endochondral Ossification in Vitro to Study Ewing Sarcoma Proliferation and Migration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A biofabricated 3D in vitro model recapitulating endochondral ossification (ECO) is described, mimicking the steps from condensation to chondrogenesis and hypertrophy, culminating with vascularization of the hypertrophic construct. As a model proof of concept application, Ewing Sarcoma cells are seeded in the model, showing modifications in their ...

The epigenetic bivalency of core pancreatic β-cell transcription factor genes within mouse pluripotent embryonic stem cells is not affected by knockdown of the polycomb repressive complex 2, SUZ12.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
This study assesses changes in activator and repressor modifications to histones associated with the core transcription factor genes most highly upregulated or downregulated in pancreatic β-cells relative to expression in an embryonic stem cell line ...

Constraints to Progress in Embryonic Stem Cells from Domestic Species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Domestic animal embryonic stem cells are of potentially big value in transgenic research and studies of lineage commitment and development. Unfortunately, despite many efforts, validated embryonic stem cell lines in species other than mice and primates ...

Intracellular α-ketoglutarate maintains the pluripotency of embryonic stem cells

open access: yesNature, 2014
The role of cellular metabolism in regulating cell proliferation and differentiation remains poorly understood. For example, most mammalian cells cannot proliferate without exogenous glutamine supplementation even though glutamine is a non-essential ...

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

The King is Dead, Long Live the King: Entering A New Era of Stem Cell Research and Clinical Development

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine, 2011
In mid November the biopharma industry was shocked by the announcement from Geron that they were ending work on embryonic stem cell research and therapy.

A strategy to ensure safety of stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cell replacement and regenerative therapy using embryonic stem cell-derived material holds promise for the treatment of several pathologies. However, the safety of this approach is of prime importance given the teratogenic potential of residual stem ...

Plasma‐Treated Hydrogel for Combined RONS and Chemotherapy Delivery: A Proof‐of‐Concept In Ovo

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores plasma‐treated hydrogels (PTH) as a new way to deliver both reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and chemotherapy (Doxorubicin) directly to tumors. In ovo tests show effects after a single dose, especially in osteosarcoma tumors. Tumor weight decrease, and a resistance‐related protein is reduced.

Pig Pluripotent Stem Cells as a Candidate for Biomedical Application

open access: yesJournal of Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology, 2019
Stem cells are progenitor cells that are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into various cells. Especially, pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have in vivo and in vitro differentiation capacity into three germ layers and can proliferate infinitely ...
