Biological Activities of Emetine [PDF]

open access: yesThe Open Natural Products Journal, 2011
Emetine is a natural product alkaloid from ipecac species. It is one of the main active ingredients in ipecac syrup used as emetic, and has been used extensively in phytomedicine as an antiparasitic drug. It inhibits both ribosomal and mitochondrial protein synthesis and interferes with the synthesis and activities of DNA and RNA.

Metabolic properties of the products of mitochondrial protein synthesis in HeLa cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
The metabolic behavior of the mitochondrial protein synthesis products has been investigated in HeLa cells. Particular attention was given to the four major electrophoretic components (designated as Nos. 2, 3, 5, and 8) of the 10 previously identified as

Distinctive pattern and translational control of mitochondrial protein synthesis in rat brain synaptic endings [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
Mitochondrial gene expression has been investigated in synaptic endings from rat cerebral cortex isolated at various stages during the postnatal development and maturation of the animal.

New drug candidates for treatment of atypical meningiomas: An integrated approach using gene expression signatures for drug repurposing. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Atypical meningiomas are common central nervous system neoplasms with high recurrence rate and poorer prognosis compared to their grade I counterparts. Surgical excision and radiotherapy remains the mainstay therapy but medical treatments are limited. We

The Mitochondrial Myopathy, Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like Episode Syndrome-associated Human Mitochondrial tRNALeu(UUR) Mutation Causes Aminoacylation Deficiency and Concomitant Reduced Association of mRNA with Ribosomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The pathogenetic mechanism of the mitochondrial tRNALeu(UUR) A3243G transition associated with the mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome has been investigated in transmitochondrial cell lines ...

Emetine as an antiviral agent suppresses SARS-CoV-2 replication by inhibitinginteraction of viral mRNAwith eIF4E: An in vitro study

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2020
Emetine is a FDA-approved drug for the treatment of amebiasis. In the recent times we had also demonstrated the antiviral efficacy of emetine against some RNA and DNA viruses.

Human Cytomegalovirus Infection Upregulates the Mitochondrial Transcription and Translation Machineries. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
UNLABELLED: Infection with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) profoundly affects cellular metabolism. Like in tumor cells, HCMV infection increases glycolysis, and glucose carbon is shifted from the mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid cycle to the biosynthesis of

Alkaloids Induce Programmed Cell Death in Bloodstream Forms of Trypanosomes (Trypanosoma b. brucei)

open access: yesMolecules, 2008
The potential induction of a programmed cell death (PCD) in Trypanosoma b. brucei by 55 alkaloids of the quinoline, quinolizidine, isoquinoline, indole, terpene, tropane, steroid, and piperidine type was studied by measuring DNA fragmentation and changes
