Abstract The four stereomer 1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy)-phenyl-1,2,3-propanetriols were obtained in about 30% yields starting from ferulic acid by a synthesis based on osmium catalyzed asymmetric dihydroxylation.

AbstractThe enantioselective synthesis of cytostatic and antibiotic xanthatin (1 a) is reported. As a key intermediate, a bicyclic compound 2 was identified, which can be readily synthesized from methyl‐2‐furoic acid in diastereo‐ and enantiomerically pure form.

Enantioselective metabolism of cumene

1. The enantioselective metabolism of cumene (isopropylbenzene) was studied in intact rabbits. 2. Of the total 2-phenyl-1-propanol formed metabolically, 90.3% was shown by h.p.l.c. to be (R)-(+)-2-phenyl-1-propanol. The corresponding values for (S)-(+)-2-phenylpropanoic acid and (R)-(-)-2-hydroxy-2-phenylpropanoic acid were 99.0 and 81.0%, respectively.

A novel approach for the asymmetric synthesis of the active (1S,2R)-enantiomer of the antidepressant milnacipran is reported. The two stereogenic centers borne by the cyclopropane ring were sequentially installed starting from phenylacetic acid.
