Heart rate variability, daily cortisol indices and their association with psychometric characteristics and gut microbiota composition in an Italian community sample

open access: yesScientific Reports
The microbiota–gut–brain axis is a complex communication system that plays a crucial role in influencing various aspects of our physical and mental health.

The Mechanism of GABA in Attenuating Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s Disease: CP/CEBPα/miR-34a-Mediated Suppression of HDAC2/3 in Astrocytes

open access: yesFoods
As a widely available dietary supplement, γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) exhibits potential for early intervention against Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study demonstrates that GABA alleviates AD neuroinflammation, and its suppression of astrocytic pro ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Residual stress relaxation and microstructure in ZnO thin films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Stability under normal environmental conditions over a long period of time is crucial for sustainable thin-film device performance. Pure ZnO films with thicknesses in the 140 - 450 nm range were deposited on amorphous glass microscope slides and (100 ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Stress in wild and captive snakes : quantification, effects and the importance of management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
As in other animals, distress and impaired welfare have a deleterious effect on the mental, physical and behavioral health of snakes in the wild and in captivity.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The miR-125a-5p/IRF4 Axis Mediates Sodium Arsenite-Induced M2 Macrophage Polarization

open access: yesBiomolecules
Arsenic, a ubiquitous metalloid, is commonly found in surface waters; as well as serious human health issues, it also induces systemic diseases and carcinogenesis upon chronic exposure.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
