Eosinophilic Inflammation in Asthma

New England Journal of Medicine, 1990
The importance of eosinophils in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma is not established. In an attempt to evaluate the role of eosinophilic inflammation in asthma, we compared 10 normal subjects with 43 patients with chronic asthma, 19 of whom had severe disease as assessed by a clinical scoring method described by Aas and by pulmonary-function tests.

Eosinophilic Asthma

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, 2020
Asthma endotypes are constantly evolving. Currently, there are no universally accepted criteria to define endotypes. The TH2-high endotype can have either allergic or nonallergic underpinnings and is typically characterized by some degree of eosinophilic airway inflammation.

Eosinophil diversity in asthma

Biochemical Pharmacology, 2020
Eosinophils are a type of granulated innate immune cells that have long been implicated in a specific type of asthma, referred to as eosinophilic asthma. Several immunotherapeutics that target and deplete eosinophils or limit their numbers are currently widely used and provide improved disease outcome in severe eosinophilic asthma.

Eosinophils and asthma

Current Allergy and Asthma Reports, 2007
Recruitment and activation of eosinophils into the airways of asthma patients is suggested to be a contributing causative agent in the histopathologies and lung dysfunction that are characteristic of asthma. Recent studies in mouse models of asthma and in human patients implicate eosinophils in immune regulation and remodeling in the lung in addition ...

Eosinophil Inflammation in Asthma

American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 1994
Eosinophils were considered for many years to be cells protect ing against allergic inflammation because they release histamin ase or arylsulfatase that can counteract the effects of some dele terious mediators released by other cells of allergic inflammation.

The eosinophil and the pathophysiology of asthma

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1986
Eosinophilia of lung and blood associated with injury to the mucociliary escalator and excessive shedding of bronchial epithelium are hallmarks of both allergic and nonallergic asthma. In vitro, the eosinophil granule major basic protein (MBP) is toxic to helminths and to mammalian cells, including human respiratory epithelium.
