In utero ventriculosubgaleal shunt placement in a fetal lamb model: Phase 1 technical insights

open access: yesPregnancy, Volume 2, Issue 4, July 2026.
Abstract Background Progressive ventriculomegaly and the resulting irreversible brain damage may be mitigated through timely diversion prenatal intervention. While ventriculosubgaleal shunt (VSGS) is commonly performed postnatally in premature infants, in utero placement is unexplored.

Cilia organize ependymal planar polarity

open access: yes, 2010
Multiciliated epithelial cells, called ependymal cells, line the ventricles in the adult brain. Most ependymal cells are born prenatally and are derived from radial glia.

Yap is required for ependymal integrity and is suppressed in LPA-induced hydrocephalus

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Failure of the ependymal cell layer that lines the ventricular surfaces of the brain can result in fetal hydrocephalus. Park et al. reveal a role for the Hippo pathway gene Yap in the generation of ependymal cells, and show that suppression of Yap is ...

Adult spinal cord ependymal layer: A promising pool of quiescent stem cells to treat spinal cord injury

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2013
Spinal cord injury is a major health burden and currently there is no effective medical intervention. Research performed over the last decade revealed that cells surrounding the central canal of the adult spinal cord and forming the ependymal layer ...

Longitudinal Cognitive Evolution in Alcohol Use Disorder Patients: Role of Inflammation, Time of Abstinence and Apolipoprotein Profile

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 31, Issue 7, July 2026.
Thirty‐three AUD patients enrolled in an Alcohol Detoxification Program at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre (Madrid, Spain) and 34 healthy controls were followed for 12 months. AUD patients exhibited impaired general cognitive functioning, elevated plasma LPS and altered apolipoproteins (APOAI, APOAE, APOAJ, APOAM), which progressively normalized ...

Microtubule Inner Protein CFAP77 Contributes to Sperm Motility and Male Fertility in Mice

open access: yesAndrology, Volume 14, Issue 5, Page 1240-1248, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Sperm motility is essential for male fertility, and its regulation is dependent on the structural integrity of the axoneme. The axoneme consists of a conserved “9+2” microtubule arrangement and is supported by microtubule inner proteins. However, the functional significance of many microtubule inner proteins remains unclear.

A highly abundant circular RNA from the RMST locus plays a role in posterior fossa ependymoma pathogenesis

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 36, Issue 4, July 2026.
circRMST (hsa_circ_0099634) is by far the most abundant isoform from the RMST locus. It is highly expressed in cancer cells throughout ependymoma patient samples and is located in the cytoplasm. circRMST knockdown causes cell cycle arrest and induces differentiation, and it is a marker for poor prognosis. The figure is made using BioRender.

Ependymal Cells Require Anks1a for Their Proper Development.

open access: yesMolecules and cells, 2019
Ependymal cells constitute the multi-ciliated epithelium, which lines the brain ventricular lumen. Although ependymal cells originate from radial glial cells in the perinatal rodent brain, the exact mechanisms underlying the full differentiation of ependymal cells are poorly understood.

EphB Signaling Controls Lineage Plasticity of Adult Neural Stem Cell Niche Cells

open access: yes, 2010
SummaryStem cells remain in specialized niches over the lifespan of the organism in many organs to ensure tissue homeostasis and enable regeneration. How the niche is maintained is not understood, but is probably as important as intrinsic stem cell self ...
