The epidermal stem cell: an overview

Seminars in Developmental Biology, 1993
Abstract The epidermis, the intestinal epithelium and the bone marrow are constantly renewed. Once a terminally differentiated cell has fulfilled its function, it is eliminated. Thus, new differentiated cells need to be constantly produced by the proliferative compartment to ensure the function of the tissue.

The Contribution of Epidermal Stem Cells to Skin Cancer

Stem Cell Reviews, 2005
Tumors arising from the skin are of multiple phenotypes, with differing degrees of malignant potential. In mouse models of skin carcinogenesis, tumors of squamous phenotype are the most common; however, human disease indicates that multiple phenotypes may arise from a common pool of stem cells that are then influenced by epigenetic factors.

In Search of the Elusive Epidermal Stem Cell

2006
Recent studies are beginning to reveal that our basic concepts of epidermal stem cell biology may be based on somewhat tenuous ground. For example, it is often assumed that colony-forming cells represent epidermal stem cells, although this has not proved to be the case in hematopoietic cell lineages.

Epidermal keratinocyte stem cells: their maintenance and regulation

Seminars in Cell Biology, 1992
The epidermis is a stratified epithelium consisting of interfollicular regions and appendages (hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands). The dominant cell type (the keratinocyte) is arranged in groups of cells termed epidermal proliferative units (EPUs), and one centrally-located clonogenic stem cell is ultimately responsible for replacing the ...
