Activation by cleavage of the epithelial Na+ channel α and γ subunits independently coevolved with the vertebrate terrestrial migration

open access: yeseLife, 2022
Vertebrates evolved mechanisms for sodium conservation and gas exchange in conjunction with migration from aquatic to terrestrial habitats. Epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC) function is critical to systems responsible for extracellular fluid homeostasis and ...

Lock, relax, load, and shoot: a molecular perspective on Nedd4 regulation

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 11, Page 3097-3110, June 2026.
Structural basis of inactive and active states of the Nedd4 HECT E3 ligase subfamily, following a ‘lock, relax, load, and shoot’ mechanism. In the locked, autoinhibited state, intramolecular domain interactions restrain the HECT domain. Relaxation releases these restraints, allowing loading of ubiquitin onto the catalytic cysteine, followed by the ...

Impact of inorganic nitrate on renal sodium excretion during saline loading in healthy adults; secondary endpoints from a randomized crossover trial

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 14, Issue 11, June 2026.
Abstract Inorganic nitrate may lower blood pressure (BP) and enhance natriuresis through nitric oxide (NO) mediated mechanisms. Studies have found inconsistent effects of NO on sodium excretion. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition suggests increased NO promotes natriuresis, whereas inorganic nitrate studies remain inconclusive.

The epithelial sodium channel mediates the directionality of galvanotaxis in human keratinocytes

open access: yes, 2013
Cellular directional migration in an electric field (galvanotaxis) is one of the mechanisms guiding cell movement in embryogenesis and in skin epidermal repair.

Membrane trafficking pathways regulating the epithelial sodium channel, ENaC.

open access: yesAJP - Renal Physiology, 2019
Renal Na+ reabsorption, facilitated by the epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, is subject to multiple forms of control to ensure optimal body blood volume and pressure through altering both ENaC population and activity at the cell surface. Here the focus is

Sodium channels and mammalian sensory mechanotransduction

open access: yesMolecular Pain, 2012
Background Members of the degenerin/epithelial (DEG/ENaC) sodium channel family are mechanosensors in C elegans, and Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 voltage-gated sodium channel knockout mice have major deficits in mechanosensation. β and γENaC sodium channel subunits

Preferential renal tubular injury and increased renal sympathetic activity occur during the early stages of DOCA‐salt hypertension in male rats

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 14, Issue 11, June 2026.
Evaluation of cardiovascular parameters and renal mediators during the development of arterial hypertension in male DOCA‐Salt rats. Abstract Although renal dysfunction is present in arterial hypertension, the mechanisms underlying renal glomerular and tubular alterations remain incompletely understood.

H2O2 regulates lung epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) via ubiquitin-like protein Nedd8

open access: yes, 2013
Redundancies in both the ubiquitin and epithelial sodium transport pathways allude to their importance of proteolytic degradation and ion transport in maintaining normal cell function.

Histone Modifications in Cardiovascular Disease: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Opportunities

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 5, May 2026.
This graphical abstract summarizes how classical and emerging histone posttranslational modifications (PTMs), together with their chromatin regulators (writers, erasers, and readers), govern major pathobiological programs in cardiovascular disease.

Colon-specific deletion of epithelial sodium channel causes sodium loss and aldosterone resistance

open access: yes, 2014
Aldosterone promotes electrogenic sodium reabsorption through the amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channel (ENaC). Here, we investigated the importance of ENaC and its positive regulator channel-activating protease 1 (CAP1/Prss8) in colon.
