A clock synchronization method for EtherCAT master

Microprocessors and Microsystems, 2016
EtherCAT has been widely applied in the motion control domain due to its advantages of the fast response speed, low CPU usage and good synchronization performance. Although the built-in distributed clock (DC) synchronization mechanism exhibits strong performance between slaves, the method of clock synchronization between the master and the reference ...

Synchronization Improvement of Distributed Clocks in EtherCAT Networks

IEEE Communications Letters, 2017
The aim of this letter is to improve the performance of clock synchronization in EtherCAT networks. Although EtherCAT synchronizes the slave clocks to the reference clock using a distributed clock synchronization mechanism, a synchronization error still exists between them. We propose a method to estimate and significantly reduce this error.

On the Wireless Extension of EtherCAT Networks

2017 IEEE 42nd Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN), 2017
EtherCAT is one of the real-time Ethernet protocols widely employed in industrial controls. However, its wireless extension is not straightforward due to the unique on-the-fly bus access method based on summation-frame. This paper explores the possibilities of interconnecting EtherCAT with wireless standards such as IEEE 802.11 and 802.15.4.

Redundant and synchronized EtherCAT network

International Symposium on Industrial Embedded System (SIES), 2010
Communication redundancy and time synchronization are two important requirements commonly found in industrial systems. However, achieving high redundancy performance in combination with highly accurate time synchronization at all times is a challenging task.

Performance analysis of switched EtherCAT Networks

2010 IEEE 15th Conference on Emerging Technologies & Factory Automation (ETFA 2010), 2010
EtherCAT is a popular, real-time Ethernet network that features very high communication efficiency. However, because of the ring topology it relies on, cycle times increase when the network size grows larger (considering both the amount of process data and the network extension).

On the accuracy of the distributed clock mechanism in EtherCAT

2010 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems Proceedings, 2010
EtherCAT is a network protocol conceived for the use in factory automation environments, which relies on realtime Ethernet technology and is characterized by very high efficiency. Besides high performance, support for synchronous operation is provided as well thanks to a mechanism known as distributed clock, which enables sampling and actuation to be ...

Motion Control System using SERCOS over EtherCAT

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2011
SERCOS interface (SErial Real time COmmunication Specification) is known as a universal ‘motion control’ interface, while EtherCAT (Ethernet for Control and Automation Technology) is a high-speed, real-time, topology-flexible industrial ethernet for data

EtherCAT network latency analysis

2016 International Conference on Computing, Communication and Automation (ICCCA), 2016
EtherCAT, a popular communication protocol based on Ethernet, with a mechanism to transfer data on the fly that enables high speed with high efficiency, plays an essential role in real-time Ethernet-based communication protocols. However, in network-based control systems, it is impossible to transmit a control command to multiple devices at the same ...
