Neuroethics and philosophy [PDF]

open access: yesFilozofija i Društvo, 2014
Neuro-ethics is probably fastest growing part of applied ethics. The main thesis is that certain natural processes in brain and nerves produce certain moral, and immoral, behaviors.

Connectionism and explanation [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 1987 workshop on Theoretical issues in natural language processing -, 1987
More generally, the problem of representing new proposit.ions in connectionist networks is a real mess. The connectionists know about this however, and t, here has been some work on the topic. The basic idea is tha t one uses the s ta te of the entire network to represent a proposition ra ther than concentra t ing it a t a node.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstraction and its Limits: Finding Space for Novel Explanation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Several modern accounts of explanation acknowledge the importance of abstraction and idealization for our explanatory practice. However, once we allow a role for abstraction, questions remain. I ask whether the relation between explanations at different

On (Some) Explanations in Physics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
I offer one possible explanation of why inertial and gravitational mass are equal in Newtonian gravitation. I then argue that the explanation given is an example of a kind of explanation that is not captured by standard philosophical accounts of ...

Explanation and inference: Mechanistic and functional explanations guide property generalization

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2014
The ability to generalize from the known to the unknown is central to learning and inference. Two experiments explore the relationship between how a property is explained and how that property is generalized to novel species and artifacts.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Investigating the development of Chinese oral explanation and justification in Singapore primary students

open access: yesCogent Education, 2016

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
