Breeding Strategy for Improvement of Omega-3 Fatty Acid through Conventional Breeding, Genetic Mapping, and Genomics in Soybean [PDF]
Plant-derived omega (ω)-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid is an essential fatty acid in human and animal diets and is a precursor of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, which exists as α-linolenic acid (ALA, ω-3) in plant oil.

Combination of Novel Mutation in FAD3C and FAD3A for Low Linolenic Acid Soybean
Core Ideas New low linolenic soybean with novel alleles of FAD3A and FAD3C. Mutation in GmFAD3C reduces linolenic acid levels. Soybean FAD3C controls linolenic acid levels. Conventional commodity soybean oil can typically have levels of linolenic acid up to 8% of the total oil fraction. As linolenic acid is unsaturated, unstable, and contributes to off‐

Novel FAD3 Mutant Allele Combinations Produce Soybeans Containing 1% Linolenic Acid in the Seed Oil
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] oil typically contains about 7% of linolenic acid, an oxidatively unstable fatty acid that is undesirable for many food applications. For cooking oil, reduction of the linolenic acid content by partial hydrogenation produces trans fatty acids, which are now known to increase the risk of coronary heart disease.

Identification of a pair of phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferases from developing flax (Linum usitatissiumum L.) seed catalyzing the selective production of trilinolenin [PDF]
The oil from flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) has high amounts of α-linolenic acid (ALA; 18:3cisΔ9,12,15) and is one of the richest sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3-PUFAs).
