The Influence of Fast Particles on Plasma Rotation in the TUMAN-3M Tokamak

open access: yesAtoms, 2022
In most present-day tokamaks, the majority of the heating power comes from sources such as neutral-beam injection (NBI) and other types of auxiliary heating which allow for the transfer of energy to the plasma by a small population of externally ...

Diagnosis of fast ions produced by negative-ion neutral-beam injection with fast-ion deuterium-alpha spectroscopy

open access: yesReview of Scientific Instruments, 2019
Negative-ion neutral-beam injection (NNBI) is an important source of heating and current drive for next-step fusion devices where the injected energy can range from hundreds of keV to 1 MeV. Few diagnostics are suitable for phase-space resolved measurements of fast ions with energy in excess of 100 keV.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Deterministic entanglement of ions in thermal states of motion

open access: yes, 2009
We give a detailed description of the implementation of a Molmer-Sorensen gate entangling two Ca+ ions using a bichromatic laser beam near-resonant with a quadrupole transition.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Experimental and numerical investigation of the Doppler-shifted resonance condition for high frequency Alfvén eigenmodes on ASDEX Upgrade

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The Doppler-shifted resonance condition for high frequency Alfvénic eigenmodes has been extensively studied on ASDEX Upgrade in the presence of one or a combination of two neutral beam injected (NBI) fast ion populations.

Fast ignition of inertial fusion targets by laser-driven carbon beams

open access: yes, 2009
Two-dimensional simulations of ion beam driven fast ignition are presented. Ignition energies of protons with Maxwellian spectrum and carbon ions with quasimonoenergetic and Maxwellian energy distributions are evaluated.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Multi-fluid simulations of chromospheric magnetic reconnection in a weakly ionized reacting plasma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We present results from the first self-consistent multi-fluid simulations of chromospheric magnetic reconnection in a weakly ionized reacting plasma. We simulate two dimensional magnetic reconnection in a Harris current sheet with a numerical model which
