Differential protein expression in honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) larvae: underlying caste differentiation. [PDF]
Honeybee (Apis mellifera) exhibits divisions in both morphology and reproduction. The queen is larger in size and fully developed sexually, while the worker bees are smaller in size and nearly infertile.

We describe how pathway engineering can be used to convert a single intermediate derived from lipid biosynthesis, fatty aldehydes, into a variety of biofuel precursors including alkanes, free fatty acids and wax esters. In cyanobacteria, long-chain acyl-ACPs can be reduced to fatty aldehydes, and then decarbonylated to alkanes.

Free fatty acids link metabolism and regulation of the insulin-sensitizing fibroblast growth factor-21 [PDF]
OBJECTIVE—Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-21 improves insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism in obese or diabetic animal models, while human studies revealed increased FGF-21 levels in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Differences in fatty acid composition between cerebral brain lobes in juvenile pigs after fish oil feeding [PDF]
Very long-chain n-3 PUFA from fish are suggested to play a role in the development of the brain. Fish oil feeding results in higher proportions of n-3 PUFA in the brains of newborn piglets. However, the effect of fish oil on the fatty acid composition of

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a bioactive lipid involved in various physiological processes such as cell proliferation and apoptosis, can be irreversibly cleaved by S1P lyase, yielding phosphoethanolamine and (2E)-hexadecenal (2EHD).

Induction of lipid oxidation by polyunsaturated fatty acids of marine origin in small intestine of mice fed a high-fat diet [PDF]
Background. Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), in particular the long chain marine fatty acids docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA), are linked to many health benefits in humans and in animal models.

Adipokines and redox signaling: impact on fatty liver disease. [PDF]
Adipokines (adipose tissue cytokines) are polypeptide factors secreted by adipose tissue in a highly regulated manner. The 'classical' adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, and resistin) are expressed only by adipocytes, but other adipokines have been shown ...
