Ferulic acid: Pharmacological and toxicological aspects

Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2014
Ferulic acid (FA) belongs to the family of phenolic acids and is very abundant in fruits and vegetables. Over the past years, several studies have shown that FA acts as a potent antioxidant by scavenging free radicals and enhancing the cell stress response through the up-regulation of cytoprotective systems, e.g. heme oxygenase-1, heat shock protein 70,

Esterification of ferulic acid with polyols using a ferulic acid esterase from Aspergillus niger

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2006
Commercially available enzyme preparations were screened for enzymes that have a high ability to catalyze direct ester-synthesis of ferulic acid with glycerol. Only a preparation, Pectinase PL "Amano" produced by Aspergillus niger, feruloylated glycerol under the experimental conditions.

Antioxidant potential of ferulic acid

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 1992
Ferulic acid is a ubiquitous plant constituent that arises from the metabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine. It occurs primarily in seeds and leaves both in its free form and covalently linked to lignin and other biopolymers. Due to its phenolic nucleus and an extended side chain conjugation, it readily forms a resonance stabilized phenoxy radical ...

Antioxidative potential of ferulic acid phenoxyl radical

Phytochemistry, 2020
The vast majority of previous studies dealing with antioxidant potency of (poly)phenols does not investigate the fate of phenoxyl radical obtained after single free radical scavenging. We investigated possible pathways of inactivation of ferulic acid phenoxyl radical (FAPR) using DFT method.

Ferulic Acid and Alzheimer’s Disease: Promises and Pitfalls

Mini-Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry, 2015
Oxidative stress plays an important role in both initiation and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer and Parkinson. Therefore, much attention has been paid to antioxidants for developing therapeutic strategies for the neurodegenerative diseases.

Detoxification of ferulic acid by ectomycorrhizal fungi

Mycorrhiza, 2003
The ectomycorrhizal fungi Laccaria amethystina and Lactarius deterrimus grown in liquid culture were used to study the fate of added ferulic acid. Laccaria amethystina degraded ferulic acid to the major metabolite vanillic acid. The intermediate vanillin was not detected. Lactarius deterrimus showed a completely different detoxification pattern.

Characterization of physicochemical properties of ferulic acid

Archives of Pharmacal Research, 2003
Ferulic acid (3-methoxy, 4-hydroxy cinnamic acid) is a flavoid component possessing antioxidant property. The compound is currently under development as a new drug candidate for the treatment of the dementia. The objective of this preformulation study was to determine the physicochemical properties of ferulic acid.

Release of ferulic acid from plant polysaccharides by ferulic acid esterase from Streptomyces olivochromogenes

Carbohydrate Polymers, 1993
Abstract Streptomyces olivochromogenes ferulic acid esterase released free ferulic acid from 0-[5-0-(trans-feruloyl)-α- l -arabinofuranosyl]-(1→3)-0-β-xylopyranosyl-(1→4)- d -xylopyranose (FAXX) prepared from wheat bran. The Km and Vmax of the reaction were 0·24 m m and 0·134 U mg−1, respectively.

Peroxidase-Catalyzed Oligomerization of Ferulic Acid Esters

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2008
Valuable information about possible types of linkages, reaction mechanisms, and sequences for oxidative coupling of phenolic compounds in planta is available from in vitro model systems. Ferulate oligomers were generated in a system using ethyl ferulate, peroxidase, and hydrogen peroxide under various conditions.
