Ferulic Acid and Alzheimer’s Disease: Promises and Pitfalls

Mini-Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry, 2015
Oxidative stress plays an important role in both initiation and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer and Parkinson. Therefore, much attention has been paid to antioxidants for developing therapeutic strategies for the neurodegenerative diseases.

Detoxification of ferulic acid by ectomycorrhizal fungi

Mycorrhiza, 2003
The ectomycorrhizal fungi Laccaria amethystina and Lactarius deterrimus grown in liquid culture were used to study the fate of added ferulic acid. Laccaria amethystina degraded ferulic acid to the major metabolite vanillic acid. The intermediate vanillin was not detected. Lactarius deterrimus showed a completely different detoxification pattern.

Characterization of physicochemical properties of ferulic acid

Archives of Pharmacal Research, 2003
Ferulic acid (3-methoxy, 4-hydroxy cinnamic acid) is a flavoid component possessing antioxidant property. The compound is currently under development as a new drug candidate for the treatment of the dementia. The objective of this preformulation study was to determine the physicochemical properties of ferulic acid.

Release of ferulic acid from plant polysaccharides by ferulic acid esterase from Streptomyces olivochromogenes

Carbohydrate Polymers, 1993
Abstract Streptomyces olivochromogenes ferulic acid esterase released free ferulic acid from 0-[5-0-(trans-feruloyl)-α- l -arabinofuranosyl]-(1→3)-0-β-xylopyranosyl-(1→4)- d -xylopyranose (FAXX) prepared from wheat bran. The Km and Vmax of the reaction were 0·24 m m and 0·134 U mg−1, respectively.

Peroxidase-Catalyzed Oligomerization of Ferulic Acid Esters

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2008
Valuable information about possible types of linkages, reaction mechanisms, and sequences for oxidative coupling of phenolic compounds in planta is available from in vitro model systems. Ferulate oligomers were generated in a system using ethyl ferulate, peroxidase, and hydrogen peroxide under various conditions.

One‐Pot, Clean Synthesis of Vanillic Acid from Ferulic Acid

ChemistrySelect, 2016
Abstract Ferulic acid dissolved in water is selectively oxidized to vanillic acid in high yield (≈60 %) under remarkably mild and green conditions, namely at room temperature with air as primary oxidant, over a catalytic amount of nanostructured Bi 2 WO 6

Release of Ferulic Acid from Oat Hulls byAspergillusFerulic Acid Esterase andTrichodermaXylanase

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2002
Oat hulls, an agricultural byproduct, contain a relatively high amount of ferulic acid (FA; 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid), which is believed to be inhibitory to oat hull biodegradability by rumen microorganisms. In this paper, Aspergillus ferulic acid esterase (FAE) was investigated for its ability to release FA from oat hulls.
