Characterization of heterologously expressed Fibril, a shape and motility determining cytoskeletal protein of the helical bacterium Spiroplasma

open access: yesiScience, 2022
Summary: Fibril is a constitutive filament-forming cytoskeletal protein of unidentified fold, exclusive to members of genus Spiroplasma. It is hypothesized to undergo conformational changes necessary to bring about Spiroplasma motility through changes in

Adjustable thermal resistor by reversibly folding a graphene sheet [PDF]

open access: yesNanoscale, 2016
Phononic (thermal) devices are studied such as thermal diode, thermal transistors, thermal logic gates, and thermal memories. However, the thermal resistor has not been demonstrated yet. Here, we propose an instantaneously adjustable thermal resistor by folded graphene.

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Ageing behaviour of folded joints produced by fusion bonding of an outer metal sheet and an inner organic sheet

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Joining Processes
Adhesive hemming is a process used in the automotive industry to join two metal sheets with good structural performance and good optical appearance of the rim. A new approach is to replace the inner metal sheet by a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic polymer

The Folded Paper Size Illusion: Evidence of Inability to Perceptually Integrate More Than One Geometrical Dimension

open access: yesi-Perception, 2016
The folded paper-size illusion is as easy to demonstrate as it is powerful in generating insights into perceptual processing: First take two A4 sheets of paper, one original sized, another halved by folding, then compare them in terms of area size by ...

Estimated secondary structure propensities within V1/V2 region of HIV gp120 are an important global antibody neutralization sensitivity determinant.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
BackgroundNeutralization sensitivity of HIV-1 virus to antibodies and anti-sera varies greatly between the isolates. Significant role of V1/V2 domain as a global neutralization sensitivity regulator has been suggested.

F-theory on 6D symmetric toroidal orbifolds

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2022
In this work we study F-theory on symmetric toroidal orbifolds that exhibit roto-translations, which are point group rotations accompanied by fractional lattice shifts. These geometries admit a rich class of effects, such as twisted affine folded fibers,

Copper Nanocrystallization in Anodic Oxide Films of Ti–Cu‐Based Bulk Metallic Glass and Its Effect on the Corrosion Resistance and Cytocompatibility

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Viktoriia Shtefan, Thorgund Nemec, Ute Hempel, Annett Gebert and coworkers demonstrate that anodic treatment of Ti–Cu‐based metallic glass in a nontoxic pyrophosphate electrolyte forms a protective bilayered Ti/Zr‐oxide film enriched with Cu nanocrystals.

Photoswitchable Conductive Metal–Organic Frameworks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A conductive material where the conductivity can be modulated remotely by irradiation with light is presented. It is based on films of conductive metal–organic framework type Cu3(HHTP)2 with embedded photochromic molecules such as azobenzene, diarylethene, spiropyran, and hexaarylbiimidazole in the pores.
