Perceptual learning in flavor preference conditioning: restricting generalization of acquired preferences between flavors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Two experiments with rats investigated perceptual learning using a conditioned preference procedure. Experiment 1 used a between-subject procedure in which rats received either intermixed preexposure (AX, BX, AX, BX…) or blocked preexposure (AX, AX…, BX,

Social information about others' affective states in a human‐altered world

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Faced with anthropogenic change, animals now encounter challenges different from their evolutionary past. To cope with such challenges, animals may use social information about others' affective states to guide their decisions. Considering affective states of wild animals could have important implications for animal welfare and wildlife conservation ...

Sentience in cephalopod molluscs: an updated assessment

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1311-1333, June 2026.
ABSTRACT This article evaluates the evidence for sentience – the capacity to have feelings – in cephalopod molluscs: octopus, cuttlefish, squid, and nautilus. Our framework includes eight criteria, covering both whether the animal's nervous system could support sentience and whether their behaviour indicates sentience.

Dissociating role of Bassoon in glutamatergic and dopaminergic neurons in alcohol‐related behaviour and affective state in mice

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 11, Page 3111-3128, June 2026.
Abstract Background and Purpose Alcohol abuse and affective disorders are severe comorbid psychiatric diseases characterized by impaired brain synaptic transmission. The role of presynaptic scaffolding proteins coordinating presynaptic plasticity and neurotransmitter release, such as Bassoon (Bsn), in the pathogenesis of these disorders remains elusive.

Effects of Insular Cortex Lesions on Conditioned Taste Aversion and Latent Inhibition in the Rat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The present study tested the hypothesis that lesions of the insular cortex of the rat retard the acquisition of conditioned taste aversions (CTAs) because of an impairment in the detection of the novelty of taste stimuli.

Behavioral Responses of Two Common Woodland Salamanders to Novel Urban Stimuli

open access: yesEthology, Volume 132, Issue 6, Page 430-439, June 2026.
We examined behavioral responses of the Eastern Red‐backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) and Northern Ravine Salamander (P. electromorphus) to novel urban stimuli. The Northern Ravine Salamander exhibited increased thigmotaxis in the presence of concrete pavers simulating roads and walkways.
