SV40-encoded microRNAs regulate viral gene expression and reduce susceptibility to cytotoxic T cells

Nature, 2005
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small (approximately 22-nucleotide) RNAs that in lower organisms serve important regulatory roles in development and gene expression, typically by forming imperfect duplexes with target messenger RNAs. miRNAs have also been described in mammalian cells and in infections with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but the function of most of ...

Regulation of viral and cellular gene expression in sensory neurons.

Gene therapy, 1996
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) establishes latent infections of neuronal cells but replicates readily in other cell types. This effect is dependent upon the presence of the inhibitory cellular transcription factor Oct-2 in neuronal cells. This factor inhibits the viral immediate-early gene promoters by at least two distinct mechanisms.

RUNX Genes in Development and Cancer: Regulation of Viral Gene Expression and the Discovery of RUNX Family Genes

2008
Mouse embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells, also called teratocarcinoma stem cells, are nonpermissive for polyomavirus growth, whereas differentiated derivatives of the cells are permissive. Mutant viruses capable of growing in EC cells can be isolated. They have genomic alterations within the viral enhancer, which is required for viral gene expression and ...

RNA recognition and regulation of HIV-1 gene expression by viral factor Tat.

Biochemistry. Biokhimiia, 1998
Viral transcription factor Tat is a small nuclear protein containing a large number of basic amino acids. The tat gene consists of two exons but only the first encoding 72-amino acid polypeptide is necessary for protein activity. Since the second exon is poorly conservative the total number of amino acids among Tat proteins from different strains of ...
