Deviation From Genetically Predicted BMI and All‐Cause Mortality: A Cohort Study in the UK Biobank

open access: yesObesity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The relation between genetically predicted BMI (gBMI) and actual BMI may have health effects. This study examines the relationship between deviations from gBMI and all‐cause mortality in 208,146 UK Biobank participants. Methods We derived gBMI from polygenic risk scores, with deviations calculated as the difference between observed ...

Genetically predicted KIR2DS4 mediate the association between gut microbe K10 and osteoporosis fractures: A mediation Mendelian randomization study

open access: yesPM&R, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Osteoporosis fractures pose a significant public health concern, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality rates. The emerging evidence on the potential link between gut microbiota, proteins, and osteoporosis fractures suggests a complex relationship that warrants further investigation.

Resilience through diversity: The potential of modelling species and variety interactions to enhance resilience of production systems

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Agricultural production systems in the global North combine monocultures of specialised varieties and breeds with external interventions and inputs. Increasing the diversity of varieties, breeds and species may increase the system's resilience to external pressures through beneficial interactions.

Has the Striga problem been solved? A field perspective critique of recent progress

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The potential field efficacy of recently proposed breeding, biocontrol, suicidal germination, gene editing and transgenic solutions for Striga control is critically evaluated and mostly found wanting improvements. Abstract Three root‐parasitic witchweed (Striga) species can cause up to total loss of grain and legume crops for millions of farmers in ...

Unlocking the genetic control of early seedling resistance to wheat powdery mildew through microphenomics

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Microphenomics is a new technique for detecting the very early resistance of powdery mildew in wheat seedlings, after 24, 48, and 72 h from infection. A number of 29, 42, and 34 genes models were identified to harbor significant SNP markers associated with the early resistance to WPM.
