A DTC niche plexus surrounds the germline stem cell pool in Caenorhabditis elegans.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The mesenchymal distal tip cell (DTC) provides the niche for Caenorhabditis elegans germline stem cells (GSCs). The DTC has a complex cellular architecture: its cell body caps the distal gonadal end and contacts germ cells extensively, but it also ...

Analysis of the transcriptional program governing meiosis and gametogenesis in yeast and mammals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
During meiosis a competent diploid cell replicates its DNA once and then undergoes two consecutive divisions followed by haploid gamete differentiation.

Assessing Cognitive Functioning in Children With Brain Tumors: Interaction of Neighborhood Social Determinants of Health and Neurological Risk

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background This study investigated how neighborhood‐level social determinants of health (SDOH), including redlining and neurological risk, interact to influence cognitive outcomes in children treated for brain tumors (CTBT). Methods A retrospective chart review of 161 CTBT aged 5–17 was conducted.

Membrane-bound steel factor maintains a high local concentration for mouse primordial germ cell motility, and defines the region of their migration.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Steel factor, the protein product of the Steel locus in the mouse, is a multifunctional signal for the primordial germ cell population. We have shown previously that its expression accompanies the germ cells during migration to the gonads, forming a ...

Doxorubicin Affects Testicular Lipids with Long-Chain (C18-C22) and Very Long-Chain (C24-C32) Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Doxorubicin disrupts spermatogenesis by causing apoptosis of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of this agent on adult rat testicular lipids and their fatty acids.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Mixed germ cell sex cord-stromal tumors of the testis and ovary. Morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic study of seven cases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We present the morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic features of three cases of testicular and four cases of ovarian mixed germ cell sex cord-stromal tumors (MGSCT).

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Transcription of nanos-1 in Zebrafish Embryos is not Affected by Bisphenol A: Evaluated Using Quantitative Real-Time PCR [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The presence of primordial germ cells (PGCs) is crucial for proper gonad formation in zebrafish (Danio rerio). The many aspects of PGC migration that allow these cells to reach the proper location at the gonadal ridge include receptors, ligands, germ ...

Transient increases in intracellular calcium and reactive oxygen species levels in TCam-2 cells exposed to microgravity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The effects of microgravity on functions of the human body are well described, including alterations in the male and female reproductive systems. In the present study, TCam-2 cells, which are considered a good model of mitotically active male germ cells,
