Studies on the Hemoglobin of Cooley's Anemia and Cooley's Trait [PDF]

open access: yes, 1952
The diseases sickle cell anemia and Cooley's anemia (also known as thalassemia or Mediterranean anemia) have associated with them "minor" or "trait" forms of the disease in which the symptomatology is minimal, and the abnormalities in the red cells are ...

Preparation of Globin.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1929
Schulz1 in 1898 prepared globin, the protein moiety of hemoglobin, by extracting an acidified solution of oxyhemoglobin with a mixture of ether and alcohol. Most of the pigment went into the ether-alcohol layer, leaving the globin in the aqueous layer.

Long‐term efficacy and safety of mitapivat in non‐transfusion‐dependent α‐ or β‐thalassaemia: An open‐label phase 2 study

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Mitapivat is an oral activator of pyruvate kinase (PK), the enzyme responsible for the final step in glycolysis, and increases production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which may lead to improvements in red blood cell health, ineffective erythropoiesis and haemolysis.

Acute splenomegaly, haemolysis, and thrombocytopenia following luspatercept initiation in a patient with transfusion‐dependent thalassaemia: A case report

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Patients with transfusion‐dependent thalassaemia (TDT) require chronic, life‐sustaining red blood cell transfusions, which contribute to iron overload and associated morbidity and mortality. Luspatercept, an inhibitor of the transforming growth factor‐beta pathway, decreases transfusion requirements in a subset of transfusion‐dependent β ...

A Membrane-Bound Vertebrate Globin

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
The family of vertebrate globins includes hemoglobin, myoglobin, and other O(2)-binding proteins of yet unclear functions. Among these, globin X is restricted to fish and amphibians. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) globin X is expressed at low levels in neurons of the central nervous system and appears to be associated with the sensory system.

Subunit-Selective Interrogation of CO Recombination in Carbonmonoxy Hemoglobin by Isotope-Edited Time-Resolved Resonance Raman Spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Hemoglobin (Hb) is an allosteric tetrameric protein made up of αβ heterodimers. The α and β chains are similar, but are chemically and structurally distinct. To investigate dynamical differences between the chains, we have prepared tetramers in which the

Determination of Androgen Bioactivity by an In Vitro Assay During Pubertal Transition in Healthy Boys

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To describe the bioactivity of circulating androgens during pubertal transition as determined by an in vitro bioassay assessing androgen receptor (AR) activation, and to compare these findings with circulating concentrations of total testosterone (total T) measured by LC‐MS/MS.

Making Molecular Diagnostics Faster

open access: yesInternational Journal of Laboratory Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Over the past 40 years, molecular diagnostic methods have evolved from multi‐step, time‐consuming protocols towards either rapid targeted tests or expansive, massively parallel testing. Aims Here we consider the speed limits of targeted molecular diagnostics, considering the three sequential required steps: nucleic acid preparation,

Proteomic analysis of plasma proteins during fentanyl withdrawal in ovariectomized female rats with and without estradiol

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, EarlyView.
Abstract Evidence from both clinical and preclinical studies indicates that females experience a faster progression to drug addiction and more severe addiction‐related health effects compared with males. Estradiol (E2) plays a critical role in these sex differences.

Extracellular vesicles in ageing cold‐stored whole blood may not compensate for the decreasing haemostatic function in vitro

open access: yesTransfusion Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have procoagulative properties. As EVs are known to accumulate in stored blood products, we compared the EV content and coagulation capacity of leukoreduced cold‐stored whole blood (CSWB) with current prehospital and in‐hospital component therapies to understand the role of EVs in the haemostatic ...
