Repurposed Single Inhibitor for Serine Protease and Spike Glycoproteins of SAR-CoV-2

open access: yes, 2020
In this research, structure of SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein S1 and S2 along with TMPRSS2, TMPRSS4, TMPRSS11A, TMPRSS11D and TMPRSS11E serine protease (which activates S1 and S2) are used for docking with repurposed inhibitor drug molecules.

Galactose starvation in a bloodstream form Trypanosoma brucei UDP-glucose 4'-epimerase conditional null mutant [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Galactose metabolism is essential for the survival of Trypanosoma brucei, the etiological agent of African sleeping sickness. T. brucei hexose transporters are unable to transport galactose, which is instead obtained through the epimerization of UDP ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Glycoproteomic Analysis of Wga-Bound Glycoprotein Biomarkers in Sera from Patients with Lung Adenocarcinoma

open access: yes, 2011
Differential protein expression profiles in the serum samples from patients with lung adenocarcinoma may be associated with glycosylation during cancer development.

Characterization of the skin mucus in the common octopus Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier) reared paralarvae

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Histochemistry, 2017
The Octopus vulgaris farming is impaired by the high mortality of the paralarvae during the first month of life. Several factors have been investigated in this regard, but no data exist on the body surface mucus, which represents the interface with the ...

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Esophageal Cancer Development: Crucial Clues Arising from the Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesCells, 2020
In the last years, the extracellular matrix (ECM) has been reported as playing a relevant role in esophageal cancer (EC) development, with this compartment being related to several aspects of EC genesis and progression.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Protein glycosylation in the gram-negative gamma proteobacterium photorhabdus luminescens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The objective of this research was to investigate the possibility that Photorhabdus luminescens produces glycoproteins and thus contains a protein glycosylation system. P. luminescens is a pathogen of insects and a symbiont of soil nematodes.
