Intussusception in the Syrian Golden hamster [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Nutrition, 1990
Of a series of ninety-six young male Syrian Golden hamsters, 13% developed lethargy, anorexia, diarrhoea and colocolic intussusception when their diet was changed from a basal laboratory-grade rodent chow to a nutritionally complete semi-purified diet. Histologically, the colon of the hamsters with intussusception had markedly reduced mucus production.

Golden Syrian Hamsters as a Model for Revisiting the Role of Biological Sex Differences in SARS-CoV-2 Infection

open access: yesmBio, 2021
There is growing evidence that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affects males more severely than females, including compelling evidence indicating that biological sex is an important clinical factor influencing disease pathology and outcomes. In their

Cross-linking peptide and repurposed drugs inhibit both entry pathways of SARS-CoV-2

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Until today effective antivirals for COVID-19 treatment are not widely available. Here, Zhao et al. characterize a dual-functional cross-linking peptide, 8P9R, that can inhibit SARS-CoV-2 virus entry in vitro and suppresses viral replication in vivo in ...

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Vasculopathy in a Syrian Golden Hamster Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Clinical evidence of vascular dysfunction and hypercoagulability as well as pulmonary vascular damage and microthrombosis are frequently reported in severe cases of human coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant causes mild pathology in the upper and lower respiratory tract of hamsters

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 several variants of concerns have been identified, with altered disease progression and transmission dynamics. Here, Armando et al.

Generation of transgenic golden Syrian hamsters [PDF]

open access: yesCell Research, 2014
Golden Syrian hamsters are small rodents, but they display many features that resemble the physiology and metabolism of humans. Hamsters have been widely used in many research areas, including carcinogenesis1, reproduction2, virology3, diabetes4 and cardiovascular diseases5.

Targeting ApoC3 Paradoxically Aggravates Atherosclerosis in Hamsters With Severe Refractory Hypercholesterolemia

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2022
RationaleApoC3 plays a central role in the hydrolysis process of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins mediated by lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which levels are positively associated with the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Although targeting ApoC3

Potent and protective IGHV3-53/3-66 public antibodies and their shared escape mutant on the spike of SARS-CoV-2

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Here, the authors combine structural, binding, mutational in vitro and in vivo assays to characterize neutralizing antibodies derived from IGHV3-53/3-66 against SARS-CoV-2, finding one antibody, named P5A-3C8, to exhibit protective efficacy in a golden ...

Validation of Stable Housekeeping Genes for Quantitative Real Time PCR in Golden Syrian Hamster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Background: Golden Syrian hamster (GSH) have many advantages as animal models in preclinical research, but their application is currently limited by the lack of standardized techniques for analyzing gene expression.

Transmission of chronic wasting disease identifies a prion strain causing cachexia and heart infection in hamsters. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an emerging prion disease of free-ranging and captive cervids in North America. In this study we established a rodent model for CWD in Syrian golden hamsters that resemble key features of the disease in cervids including ...
