A new view of axon growth and guidance grounded in the stochastic dynamics of actin networks
The mechanism of axon growth and guidance is a core, unsolved problem in neuroscience and cell biology. For nearly three decades, our view of this process has largely been based on deterministic models of motility derived from studies of neurons cultured

Protein synthesis within neuronal growth cones [PDF]
This study investigates the capacity of neuronal growth cones to synthesize protein locally and independently of their cell body. Isolated growth cones were prepared from cultures of neurons from the snail Helisoma by transecting neurites proximal to the growth cone.

ABSTRACT Objective To determine the concentration of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma in Alexander disease (AxD) and whether GFAP levels are predictive of disease phenotypes. Methods CSF and plasma were collected (longitudinally when available) from AxD participants and non‐AxD controls.

Cytoskeletal dynamics in growth-cone steering [PDF]
Interactions between dynamic microtubules and actin filaments are essential to a wide range of cell biological processes including cell division, motility and morphogenesis. In neuronal growth cones, interactions between microtubules and actin filaments in filopodia are necessary for growth cones to make a turn.

Gradient-reading and mechano-effector machinery for netrin-1-induced axon guidance
Growth cones navigate axonal projection in response to guidance cues. However, it is unclear how they can decide the migratory direction by transducing the local spatial cues into protrusive forces.

Herein, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is discussed as a powerful extension of conventional SEM for life sciences. By combining high‐resolution imaging with variable pressure and humidity, ESEM allows the analysis of untreated biological materials, supports in situ monitoring of hydration‐driven changes, and advances the functional ...

Neuronal Signaling Involved in Neuronal Polarization and Growth: Lipid Rafts and Phosphorylation
Neuronal polarization and growth are developmental processes that occur during neuronal cell differentiation. The molecular signaling mechanisms involved in these events in in vivo mammalian brain remain unclear.
