Rickettsia parkeri hypothetical protein RPATATE_1266, a homolog of exopolyphosphatase/guanosine pentaphosphate phosphohydrolase, regulates tick cell apoptosis [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Rickettsia parkeri, an intracellular bacterium transmitted by Amblyomma maculatum ticks, causes a febrile illness associated with eschar formation in humans. As a less virulent member of the spotted fever group within the Rickettsia genus, R.

Functional characterization of exopolyphosphatase/guanosine pentaphosphate phosphohydrolase (PPX/GPPA) ofCampylobacter jejuni [PDF]

open access: yesVirulence, 2014
The inorganic polyphosphate (poly-P) is a key regulator of stress responses and virulence in many bacterial pathogens including Campylobacter jejuni. The role of exopolyphosphatases/guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) phosphohydrolases (PPX/GPPA) in poly-P homeostasis and C. jejuni pathobiology remains unexplored.

Activation of ATP:GTP 3'-pyrophosphotransferase (guanosine pentaphosphate synthetase) in Streptomyces antibioticus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1994
The activity of the ATP:GTP 3'-pyrophosphotransferase (guanosine pentaphosphate synthetase I [GPSI]) from Streptomyces antibioticus is stimulated maximally by methanol at 20% (vol/vol) in assay mixtures. Although the enzyme is not activated by ribosomes, its activity is stimulated by tRNA (uncharged or charged) and by synthetic mRNA [e.g., poly(U ...

Identification, characterization and expression analysis of wheat RSH family genes under abiotic stress [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2023
Guanosine pentaphosphate and guanosine tetraphosphate are collectively called (p)ppGpp (Guanosine tetraphosphate and pentaphosphate). (p)ppGpp content in plants is affected by conditions such as light, salt, pH, UV light, and environmental phytohormones.

Bacterial alarmone (p)ppGpp mediates the pathogenicity of Clavibacter michiganensis via a dual mechanism that affects both enzyme production and the Tat secretion system [PDF]

open access: yesmSystems
The gram-positive bacterium Clavibacter michiganensis (Cm) causes bacterial canker of tomato. The infection process of Cm is of considerable interest, and the role of the alarmone guanosine tetraphosphate or pentaphosphate [(p)ppGpp], a global regulator,

Accumulation of guanosine tetraphosphate and guanosine pentaphosphate in Myxococcus xanthus during starvation and myxospore formation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1980
Cultures of Myxococcus xanthus develop multicellular fruiting bodies when starved for carbon and nitrogen sources on an agar surface. Under these conditions of severe starvation, cultures rapidly accumulated a compound identified as guanosine tetraphosphate by chromatographic migration of the compound and of its major acid and alkali breakdown products.

Purification and properties of ATP:GTP 3'-pyrophosphotransferase (guanosine pentaphosphate synthetase) from Streptomyces antibioticus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1994
Two forms of ATP:GTP 3'-pyrophosphotransferase (guanosine pentaphosphate synthetase) have been purified from Streptomyces antibioticus. The larger form has an M(r) of 88,000, while the M(r) of a smaller form is 47,000. Both synthetase forms are active in the formation of guanosine 5'-triphosphate, 3'-diphosphate in reaction mixtures containing methanol.

Guanosine Tetra- and Pentaphosphate Promote Accumulation of Inorganic Polyphosphate in Escherichia coli [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1997
High levels of guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) and guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp), generated in response to amino acid starvation in Escherichia coli, lead to massive accumulations of inorganic polyphosphate (polyP). Inasmuch as the activities of the principal enzymes that synthesize and degrade polyP fluctuate only slightly, the polyP accumulation

Guanosine pentaphosphate synthetase from Streptomyces antibioticus is also a polynucleotide phosphorylase. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Bacteriol, 1996
The gene for the enzyme guanosine pentaphosphate synthetase I (GPSI) from Streptomyces antibioticus has been cloned and sequenced. The cloned gene functioned as a template in the streptomycete coupled transcription-translation system and directed the synthesis of a protein with the properties expected for GPSI.

Guanosine tetra- and pentaphosphate increase antibiotic tolerance by reducing reactive oxygen species production in Vibrio cholerae [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2018
The pathogen Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of cholera. Emergence of antibiotic-resistant V. cholerae strains is increasing, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, we report that the stringent response regulator and stress alarmone guanosine tetra- and pentaphosphate ((p)ppGpp) significantly contributes to antibiotic tolerance in
