Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.

Regenerative potential of CD200- subpopulations of hair follicle bulge

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
The hair follicle bulge is regarded as a reservoir of epithelial stem cells for hair regeneration. Hair follicle bulge cells are generally characterized by CD200 expression.

Cell-Specific Transcriptome Analysis Shows That Adult Pillar and Deiters' Cells Express Genes Encoding Machinery for Specializations of Cochlear Hair Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2018
The mammalian auditory sensory epithelium, the organ of Corti, is composed of hair cells and supporting cells. Hair cells contain specializations in the apical, basolateral and synaptic membranes.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, a prototypic chemopreventative agent for protection against cisplatin-based ototoxicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity is one of the major factors limiting cisplatin chemotherapy. Ototoxicity results from damage to outer hair cells (OHCs) and other regions of the cochlea.

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...

Effects of DAPT and Atoh1 overexpression on hair cell production and hair bundle orientation in cultured Organ of Corti from neonatal rats.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
BackgroundIn mammals, hair cells do not undergo spontaneous regeneration when they are damaged and result in permanent hearing loss. Previous studies in cultured Organ of Corti dissected from neonatal animals have shown that both DAPT (r-secretase ...

Characterization of Hair Cell-Like Cells Converted From Supporting Cells After Notch Inhibition in Cultures of the Organ of Corti From Neonatal Gerbils

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2018
The senses of hearing and balance depend upon hair cells, the sensory receptors of the inner ear. Hair cells transduce mechanical stimuli into electrical activity.

The transfer characteristics of hair cells encoding mechanical stimuli in the lateral line of zebrafish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Hair cells transmit mechanical information by converting deflection of the hair bundle into synaptic release of glutamate. We have investigated this process in the lateral line of larval zebrafish (male and female) to understand how mechanical stimuli ...

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Epidermal stem cells and skin tissue engineering in hair follicle regeneration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The reconstitution of a fully organized and functional hair follicle from dissociated cells propagated under defined tissue culture conditions is a challenge still pending in tissue engineering.
