The Impact of a Bump on the Response of a Bridge to Traffic

open access: yes, 2012
The Twelfth International Conference on Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Computing, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, 1-4 September 2009There are numerous studies on the dynamic amplification factors caused by traffic flow on a bridge.

Scheduling in the High-Uncertainty Heavy Traffic Regime

open access: yesMathematics of Operations Research
We propose a model uncertainty approach to heavy traffic asymptotics that allows for a high level of uncertainty. That is, the uncertainty classes of underlying distributions accommodate disturbances that are of order 1 at the usual diffusion scale as opposed to asymptotically vanishing disturbances studied previously in relation to heavy traffic.

NQO1‐Mediated Anoikis Resistance and Immune Evasion Define a High‐Risk Multi‐Omic Subtype for Precision Management of T1 High‐Grade Bladder Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Multi‐omic profiling of T1 high‐grade bladder cancer identifies a high‐risk subtype (T1HG1) driven by NQO1, which couples anoikis resistance with immune evasion. NQO1 orchestrates macrophage–T cell crosstalk suppression via CXCL9 modulation. Pharmacological NQO1 inhibition with skullcapflavone II enhances cisplatin efficacy, representing a promising ...

Self-reported traffic-related air pollution and respiratory symptoms among adults in an area with modest levels of traffic.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Health effects of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) concentrations in densely populated areas are previously described. However, there is still a lack of knowledge of the health effects of moderate TRAP levels.

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...

Heavy traffic analysis for continuous polling models [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We consider a continuous polling system in heavy traffic. Using the relationship between such systems and age-dependent branching processes, we show that the steady-state number of waiting customers in heavy traffic has approximately a gamma distribution.

Lactation is Associated with Accelerated Postpartum Pelvic Floor Muscle Recovery in a Pregnant Simulated Birth Injury Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Healthy pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) are essential for proper pelvic floor function. The biggest risk factor for PFM dysfunction is injury sustained during vaginal childbirth, yet the factors that facilitate or impair PFM recovery from birth injury remain unknown.

Assessment of Passenger Car Equivalency for Increased Heavy Vehicles Percentage on Urban Multilane Roads—A Field-Based Study

open access: yesFuture Transportation
Heavy vehicles leave a significant impact on passenger vehicles, which results in traffic instability. The size, acceleration, and behaviour of heavy vehicles notably influence the traffic flow.

Conceptualising quality early childhood education: Learning from young children in Brazil and South Africa through creative and play‐based methods

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Early childhood has increasingly been acknowledged as a vital time for all children. Inclusive and quality education is part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with the further specification that all children have access to quality pre‐primary education.
