Foraging activity by an ecosystem engineer, the superb lyrebird, ‘farms’ its invertebrate prey

Journal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 5, Page 848-862, May 2025.
We show that the superb lyrebird, an ecosystem engineer, undertakes a unique form of resource farming through its foraging activity. By modulating litter and soil habitats on the forest floor, lyrebirds create conditions conducive to their invertebrate prey, increasing richness and biomass and resulting in a remarkable farming feedback loop.

THE COSMOPOLITICS OF CATS AND WILDLIFE ON CAPE TOWN'S URBAN EDGE

Abstract Free‐ranging cats are widely tolerated in cities, and animal welfare organizations increasingly allow for ‘trap, neuter and release’ (TNR) of unowned cats. We show, using the example of a university campus adjacent to a national park in a large metropole, that this has implications for cosmopolitics over biodiversity on the urban edge.

Assessing the role of habitat, climate, and anthropization gradients on terrestrial mammal diversity in the western Mediterranean basin

This study investigates the impact of landscape features and human influence on terrestrial mammal diversity in the Mediterranean basin using 300 camera traps across 28 sites. Contrary to expectations, landscape heterogeneity and anthropization did not correlate with mammal diversity.
