Dangerous universal donors: the reality of the Hemocentro in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia
BACKGROUND: The term dangerous universal blood donor refers to potential agglutination of the erythrocytes of non-O recipients due to plasma of an O blood group donor, which contains high titers of anti-A and/or anti-B hemagglutinins.

Neutralizing immune responses induced by oligomeric H5N1-hemagglutinins from plants

open access: yesVeterinary Research, 2017
Plant-based transient expression is an alternative platform to produce hemagglutinin-based subunit vaccines. This production system provides not only fast and effective response in the context of a pandemic but also enables the supply of big volume ...

Lectins and Tetrahymena – A review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The unicellular ciliate Tetrahymena is a complete organism, one of the most highly developed protozoans, which has specialized organelles performing each of the functions characteristic to the cells of higher ranked animals.

MVP Inhibits Influenza A Virus‐Induced Ferroptosis by Targeting IRF1 and Increasing FSP1 Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
During IAV infection, MVP inhibits IRF1 polyubiquitination, thereby relieving IRF1‐mediated transcriptional inhibition of FSP1. Consequently, this leads to an upregulation of FSP1 expression, thereby reinforcing the inhibition of ferroptosis. In addition, the MVP can promote myristoylation and ubiquitination of FSP1, enabling its membrane localization ...

Increased Numbers of CD4+ T‐Cells in the Hypocretin/Orexin Region of Narcolepsy Type 1

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is presumed to be an autoimmune disorder caused by hypothalamic loss of hypocretin (Hcrt; orexin). In postmortem NT1 brains, we observed an 11‐fold increase of CD4+ T‐cells in the Hcrt region compared with control hypothalami, without a corresponding rise in CD8+ T‐cells.

Simultaneous measurements of auto-immune and infectious disease specific antibodies using a high throughput multiplexing tool. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Considering importance of ganglioside antibodies as biomarkers in various immune-mediated neuropathies and neurological disorders, we developed a high throughput multiplexing tool for the assessment of gangliosides-specific antibodies based on Biolpex ...

Synthetic vaccine affords full protection to mice against lethal challenge of influenza B virus of both genetic lineages

open access: yesiScience, 2021
Summary: A quarter of all seasonal influenza cases are caused by type B influenza virus (IBV) that also dominates periodically. Here, we investigated a recombinant adenovirus vaccine carrying a synthetic HA2 representing the consensus sequence of all IBV

Nanostructured Lipid Carriers Overcome the Low Immunogenicity of M2e Peptide via Surface Click Chemistry Conjugation, Improving the Anti‐M2e Antibody Response

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
1) Nanostructured lipid carriers efficiently vectorize low‐immunogenic M2e peptide. 2) M2e peptide conjugation via click chemistry preserves the peptide key epitopes. 3) Forty M2e peptides per nanoparticle are sufficient to induce robust immune responses.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus hemagglutinin binds fibronectin [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1994
Attachment of microorganisms to host tissue is regarded as an important step in the pathogenesis of infections. Staphylococcus saprophyticus adheres to various epithelial cells and hemagglutinates sheep erythrocytes. The hemagglutinin has been identified, but a human target for this surface protein is still not known.

Presence of a low molecular weight lectin in the coelomic fluid of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus [PDF]

open access: yesInvertebrate Survival Journal, 2009
A low molecular weight (MW) lectin (Paracentrotus lividus small lectin, PlSL) has been found in the sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus. After gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions, PlSL exhibits a MW of 13 kDa, while its hemagglutinating ...
