Expression of heme oxygenase-1 in rat ontogeny

open access: yesArchives of Histology and Cytology, 2003
Heme oxygenase (HO), the heme-degrading enzyme, plays an important role in heme catabolism. Among three isozymes, HO-1 is an inducible form expressed mainly in macrophages. In rat ontogeny, HO-1 immunoreactivity was detected in mononuclear cells in the yolk sac at 10 days of gestation.

Research progress on the role of inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of epilepsy

open access: yesIbrain, Volume 11, Issue 1, Page 44-58, Spring 2025.
In the central nervous system, activated immune cells lead to the overproduction of inflammatory mediators through the corresponding signal pathway. Under the stimulation of inflammatory factors, neuroinflammation ultimately occurs. Overexpression of inflammatory mediators and activated immunocytes plays an important role in the emergence and ...

Decidual macrophage‐mediated ferroptosis in trophoblasts leads to recurrent spontaneous abortion

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
Decidual macrophages from recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) patients promote trophoblast ferroptosis and impair trophoblast cell function. Mechanistically, the CXCL2/NF‐κB/HMOX1 axis mediates this effect. Conversely, trophoblasts co‐cultured with RSA decidual macrophages induce pro‐inflammatory macrophage polarization through IL‐6/JAK2/STAT3 ...

Combined fluorometric analysis of biliverdin and bilirubin by the recombinant protein HUG

open access: yesMethodsX
Biliverdin is a secondary metabolite of heme catabolism. It is formed by the reaction catalyzed by heme oxygenase, which converts the heme group contained in proteins such as hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes, and catalase into biliverdin, iron (II) and

Protein interactions with heme are vital for pathogenic bacteria, particularly in the utilization of heme as an iron source

open access: yes, 2023
Iron is an essential nutrient for many pathogenic bacteria, and the most abundant source of the metal in the host is heme. Heme is often degraded by a heme oxygenase, and the first such enzyme (HO-1) was discovered in mammals.

Protective Role of Polydatin Against Vancomycin‐Induced Lung Toxicity via Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress, Apoptosis, and Ferroptosis Pathways

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate whether polydatin (Poly) could eliminate the harmful effects of vancomycin (VCM) on the lungs of rats. Rats were administered VCM (200 mg/kg) and Poly (50 mg/kg), both separately and in combination, for a duration of 7 days.

Heme controls ferroportin1 (FPN1) transcription involving Bach1, Nrf2 and a MARE/ARE sequence motif at position −7007 of the FPN1 promoter

open access: yesHaematologica, 2010
Background Macrophages of the reticuloendothelial system play a key role in recycling iron from hemoglobin of senescent or damaged erythrocytes. Heme oxygenase 1 degrades the heme moiety and releases inorganic iron that is stored in ferritin or exported ...

The effects of Bilirubin and Bilirubin-di-taurate on ischemia reperfusion injruy in a rat model of kidney transplantation

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the conversion of heme into biliverdin, carbon monoxide (CO) and free iron. Biliverdin is then subsequently reduced to bilirubin by the enzyme bilverdin reductase.

Prevention of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in the Rat Liver by Atrial Natriuretic Peptide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This work characterizes the protective effects of ANP preconditioning in ischemia-reperfusion injury of the isolated perfused rat liver. It was of particular interest to evaluate the influence of ANP on the mode of cell death occurring during cold ...
