Alfalfa Flavonoids Mitigate Salmonella‐Induced Colitis via the Keap1‐Nrf2 and TLR4/NF‐κB/COX‐2 Pathways

open access: yesFood Frontiers, EarlyView.
Alfalfa flavonoids (AF) protected against Salmonella‐induced colitis by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. AF inhibited the TLR4/IκB/NF‐κB/COX‐2 pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome, lowering pro‐inflammatory cytokines, while activating Keap1‐Nrf2 to boost antioxidants (e.g., HO‐1, NQO1, SOD, GPx), decreasing ROS‐driven oxidative stress.

Carnitine metabolism to trimethylamine by an unusual Rieske-type oxygenase from human microbiota [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Dietary intake of L-carnitine can promote cardiovascular diseases in humans through microbial production of trimethylamine (TMA) and its subsequent oxidation to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) by hepatic flavin-containing monooxygenases.

Heme oxygenase-1 and cardiovascular disease.

open access: yesHistology and histopathology, 2006
Heme oxygenase (HO)-1 is the inducible isoform of the first and rate-controlling enzyme of heme degradation. HO-1 is up-regulated by a host of oxidative stress stimuli and has potent cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory functions via decreasing tissue levels of the prooxidant heme along with production of bilirubin and the signaling gas carbon monoxide.

Phytochemical Contents and Bioactive Compounds in Widely Consumed Cereals, Legumes, and Vegetables in Abruzzo Region, Italy: A Critical Review

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
This review aims to collect and identify cereals, legumes, and vegetables mostly consumed in the Abruzzo region from 2020 till now, pointing attention to their biological effects. ABSTRACT The Abruzzo region boasts a wide range of typical food products including cereals, legumes, and vegetables. In this context, they take part in the Mediterranean diet,

Controlled Ascent Rate Enhances Autophagy and Mitigates Acute Lung Injury in Rats Exposed to High‐Altitude Hypoxia by Inhibiting Oxidative Stress and Inflammation

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, EarlyView.
This study explores how gradual ascent rates reduce acute pulmonary injury in rats exposed to high‐altitude hypoxia by activating autophagy and suppressing oxidative stress and inflammation. Results show that controlled ascent effectively mitigates such injury, highlighting its potential as a preventive strategy.

Relationship between NOX4 level and angiotensin II signaling in Gitelman's syndrome. Implications with hypertension [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Recent evidence showed that endogenous nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-oxidase 4 (NOX4) may exert a protective role on the cardiovascular system inducing vasodilation, reduction of blood pressure, and anti-proliferative actions.
