Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae as Unexpected Cause of Fatal Outbreak in Captive Marmosets, Brazil

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2020
After the sudden death of captive marmosets in São Paulo, Brazil, we conducted a histologic and microbiologic study. We found hyperacute septicemia caused by hypermucoviscous sequence type 86 K2 Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Hypermucoviscous Klebsiella syndrome it's in the community!

open access: yesJPMA. The Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association, 2019
Hypermucoviscous Klebsiella syndrome is a unique syndrome caused by a new variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP), characterized by abscess formation at distant body sites. This emerging KP strain is different from the usual classic strains in having the rmp gene which increases capsule formation making this strain resistant to phagocytosis and helping ...

Contribution of disease to Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) pup mortality at Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island, 2016–2022

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 41, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract The endangered Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) population is declining, and its conservation is threatened by the species' low fecundity and high pup mortality. This study details reasons for pup deaths and quantifies the impacts of disease and comorbidity. Of 284 dead pups reported from five breeding seasons (2016–2022) at the Seal Bay

Pyogenic Liver Abscess, Bacteremia, and Meningitis with Hypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae: An Unusual Case Report in a Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus Positive Patient of Caribbean Origin in the United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a potentially fatal disease. Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) has replaced Escherichia coli (E. coli) as the predominant causative organism for pyogenic liver abscess.

Genomic characterization of hypermucoviscous Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST25 isolates from northwest Argentina

open access: yes, 2022
In recent years, an increase in the prevalence hypermucoviscous carbapenem-resistantKlebsiella pneumoniae with sequence type 25 (ST25) was detected in hospitals of Tucuman (Northwest Argentina).

Carbapenem Resistance Conferred by OXA-48 in K2-ST86 Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae, France

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2020
We recovered 2 carbapenem-resistant K2-ST86 hypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from patients in France. The isolates had genetic attributes of hypervirulent K. pneumoniae but differed in ability to cause mouse lethality.

Molecular Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae Strains Isolated From Dairy Cows in Xinjiang, China

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 1, January 2025.
WGS identified 27 wzi allele types (2 new), 16 K antigen serotypes, 6 O antigen serotypes, 25 sequence types (3 new), 39 antibiotic resistance and 57 virulence genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae from milk samples of cows with and without mastitis. Phylogenetic analysis showed high genomic diversity in K. pneumoniae.

The Influence of Carbohydrates on the Virulence Potential of Klebsiella variicola Isolates

open access: yesInternational Journal of Microbiology, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Klebsiella variicola is a Gram‐negative bacillus belonging to Enterobacteriaceae recognized as an emerging human pathogen in the last years. The species is frequently misidentified as Klebsiella pneumoniae by conventional microbiological tests, raising questions about its real prevalence and clinical impact. K. variicola virulence is mediated by traits
