Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1α Target Genes Contribute to Retinal Neuroprotection

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2017
Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a transcription factor that facilitates cellular adaptation to hypoxia and ischemia. Long-standing evidence suggests that one isotype of HIF, HIF-1α, is involved in the pathogenesis of various solid tumors and cardiac ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Differential hypoxic regulation of the microRNA-146a/CXCR4 pathway in normal and leukemic monocytic cells: impact on response to chemotherapy

open access: yesHaematologica, 2015
High expression of the chemokine receptor 4, CXCR4, associated with a negative prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia, is related to hypoxia. Because CXCR4 expression is under the post-transcriptional control of microRNA-146a in normal and leukemic ...

microRNA-33a-5p increases radiosensitivity by inhibiting glycolysis in melanoma. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Glycolysis was reported to have a positive correlation with radioresistance. Our previous study found that the miR-33a functioned as a tumor suppressor in malignant melanoma by targeting hypoxia-inducible factor1-alpha (HIF-1α), a gene known to promote ...

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α activates transforming growth factor-β1/Smad signaling and increases collagen deposition in dermal fibroblasts

open access: yesOncoTarget, 2017
Hypoxia of local tissue occurs during the scar formation; however, the degree of ischemia and hypoxia in the central areas of keloids is more serious than those in normal scars.

Swelling‐Programmed Topographical Guidance for Dynamic Spheroid Self‐Assembly via a Mechanochemical Hydrogel Niche

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A swelling‐programmed micropatterned hydrogel guides adherent cells through a controlled transition from cell–matrix anchoring to cadherin‐mediated cell–cell compaction, enabling rapid assembly of high‐viability spheroids with defined size and morphology.

Tissue‐Stimulator Platform for Electrically Stimulating Pancreatic β‐Cells for Long‐Term Functional Regulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a tissue‐stimulator platform for seamless electrode integration with pancreatic tissue, applying uniform electrical stimulation through optimized design with biohybrid 3D printing. Advantageous effects of electrical stimulation on β‐cell function were observed, including enhanced calcium signaling, islet morphology, and maturation.

Correlations of serum hypoxia-inducible factor 1α, vascular endothelial growth factor, and stromal cell-derived factor-1 levels with microvascular injury in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy

open access: yesRomanian Journal of Laboratory Medicine
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is characterized by pathological neovascularization and microvascular damage driven by hypoxia-related mechanisms.

Reconstituted high-density lipoproteins promote wound repair and blood flow recovery in response to ischemia in aged mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: The average population age is increasing and the incidence of age-related vascular complications is rising in parallel. Impaired wound healing and disordered ischemia-mediated angiogenesis are key contributors to age-impaired vascular ...

Assembly of Cell‐Seeded 3D Printed Hydrogel Modules with Perfusable Channel Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Macroscale assembly was utilized to prepare perfusable tissue constructs from individually 3D printed hydrogel modules with embedded branched channel networks and port arrays for cell seeding. Novel multi‐material bioreactors were fabricated to facilitate the gluing of individual modules and the perfusion culture of assembled modular constructs seeded ...
