1H NMR metabolomics and lipidomics analysis of neutrophils reveals biomarkers of ageing, inflammageing and frailty

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Using 1H NMR metabolomics, we measured polar and lipid metabolites from human blood neutrophils from people with frailty (n = 31, mean age 84Y), people with rheumatoid arthritis (n = 16, mean age 55Y), robust older (n = 24, mean age 66Y) and healthy younger people (n = 21, mean age 22Y).

SARS‐CoV‐2 targets mitochondria, exacerbating COVID‐19 pneumonia

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Following entry into airway epithelial cells (AECs), SARS‐CoV‐2 releases its single‐stranded RNA into the cytoplasm, where it is translated into viral proteins. Several of these viral proteins localize to mitochondria and interact with key mitochondrial components.

Raman micro-spectroscopy as a tool to study immunometabolism [PDF]

open access: yes
In the past two decades, immunometabolism has emerged as a crucial field, unraveling the intricate molecular connections between cellular metabolism and immune function across various cell types, tissues, and diseases.

Immunometabolism in cancer: basic mechanisms and new targeting strategy

open access: yesCell Death Discovery
Maturing immunometabolic research empowers immune regulation novel approaches. Progressive metabolic adaptation of tumor cells permits a thriving tumor microenvironment (TME) in which immune cells always lose the initial killing capacity, which remains ...

Exercise training prior to and during cancer in mice preserves muscle mass, reduces tumour weight and suppresses molecular mediators of cachexia

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend PoWeR training (11.5 weeks of voluntary wheel running with progressively increased resistance) before and during cancer attenuates muscle loss, limits tumour growth, drives a transition toward a more oxidative muscle phenotype (IIB‐to‐IIA shift), downregulates cachexia‐associated pathways and enhances mitochondrial performance in

The Impact of Ghrelin in Metabolic Diseases: An Immune Perspective

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Research, 2017
Obesity and insulin resistance have reached epidemic proportions. Obesogenic conditions are associated with increased risk for the development of other comorbidities and obesity-related diseases.

Mesenteric Lymphatic Dysfunction as the Initiating Event in Crohn's Disease: Toward an Outside‐In Paradigm

open access: yesJCC Plus, Volume 1, Issue 4, July 2026.
Mesenteric lymphatic dysfunction promotes immune cell accumulation and chronic inflammation, leading to creeping fat formation. Progressive activity drives transmural inflammation. ABSTRACT Crohn's disease (CD) has traditionally been explained by an “inside‐out” model, in which disruption of the intestinal mucosal barrier allows luminal bacteria to ...

Macrophage Immunometabolism: Where Are We (Going)?

open access: yes, 2017
A growing number of findings highlight the crucial role of metabolic reprogramming in macrophage activation. Metabolic pathways are closely interconnected and recent literature demonstrates the need for glucose metabolism in anti-inflammatory as well as ...

Daily Consumption of Unprocessed/Minimally Processed Foods and Its Relationship with Serum Phosphorus, CD3+, and CD45+ Cell Counts in People Living with HIV: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study

open access: yesMedical Sciences
Objectives: To investigate the potential associations between the daily consumption of unprocessed/minimally processed foods and serum phosphorus levels, CD3+, and CD45+ cell counts in clinically stable people living with HIV (PLHIV).

Endoplasmic reticulum stress and the unfolded protein response in lung diseases: molecular pathways and therapeutic interventions

open access: yesThe Journal of Pathology, Volume 269, Issue 3, Page 268-283, July 2026.
Abstract Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) occurs when the protein‐folding capacity of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is overwhelmed, triggering the unfolded protein response (UPR) to restore homeostasis. However, severe or persistent ERS can shift the UPR toward pro‐inflammatory, apoptotic, and fibrotic signaling, thereby exacerbating tissue injury ...
