The keto pyrrolidone 2 in the presence of acid produces the enamine 3a and the rearranged quinolone 4. Evidence is presented for the mechanism of this new rearrangement, the key step being a remarkably facile opening and reclosure of the indoline ring [Formula: see text] which even occurs in acetic acid.
