Streptococci target inflammasome
Nature Microbiology, 2017The Streptococcus pyogenes surface M protein is a critical multifunctional virulence factor. Recent work sheds light on a new unexpected function of the M protein in activating the host inflammasome to induce macrophage cell death and promote infection.

Inflammasome-independent pyroptosis
Current Opinion in ImmunologyGasdermins are membrane pore-forming proteins that cause pyroptosis, an inflammatory cell death in which cells burst and release cytokines, chemokines, and other host alarm signals, such as ATP and HMGB1, which recruit and activate immune cells at sites of infection and danger. There are five gasdermins in humans - gasdermins A to E.

Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes whose activity has been implicated in physiological and pathological inflammation. The hallmarks of inflammasome activation are the secretion of the mature forms of Caspase-1 and IL-1β from cells of the innate immune system.
