Time and Inhibitory Learning

open access: yes, 2011
Associative theories of learning state that an organism acquires new behaviors when associations are formed between a Conditioned Stimulus (CS) and an Unconditioned Stimulus (US).

Repeatability and heritability of inhibitory control performance in wild toutouwai (Petroica longipes)

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2023
Despite increasing interest in the evolution of inhibitory control, few studies have examined the validity of widespread testing paradigms, the long-term repeatability and the heritability of this cognitive ability in the wild.

α‐Synuclein aggregation landscape from phase separation to neurotoxic intermediates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Alpha‐synuclein aggregation in Parkinson's disease involves a complex landscape of transient intermediates, including oligomers, fibrils and liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS). A view is emerging in which LLPS maturation into solid‐like condensates may contribute to the formation of neurotoxic species.

Maximizing expectancy violation and exposure outcomes in patients with PTSD

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Psychotraumatology
Background: It has been proposed that maximizing expectancy violation enhances the efficacy of exposure therapy. The clinical utility of expectancy violation remains unclear and it has not yet been studied in PTSD.Objective: We aimed to test whether ...

The herbicide glyphosate inhibits hippocampal long-term potentiation and learning through activation of pro-inflammatory signaling

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Glyphosate, a herbicide marketed as Roundup, is widely used but there are concerns this exposure could impair cognitive function. In the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices, we investigated whether glyphosate alters synaptic transmission and long-term ...

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Associative learning in insects : evolutionary models, mushroom bodies, and a neuroscientific conundrum

open access: yes, 2011
Environmental predictability has for many years been posited to be a key variable in whether learning is expected to evolve in particular species, a claim revisited in two recent papers.

The role of 24-h movement Behaviors in preschool children’s learning ability: the mediating effect of inhibitory control

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology
PurposeTo investigate the impact of 24-h movement behaviors—sleep (SP), sedentary behavior (SB), light physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA)—on preschool children’s learning ability, with emphasis on inhibitory ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...
