Plasma kisspeptin levels are associated with insulin secretion in nondiabetic individuals [PDF]
To evaluate if plasma kisspeptin concentrations are associated with insulin secretion, as suggested by recent in vitro studies, independently of confounders. 261 nondiabetic subjects were stratified into tertiles according to kisspeptin values.

THE HYPOPHYSIS AND SECRETION OF INSULIN [PDF]
The ability of the pancreas, from various types of dogs, to correct diabetic hyperglycemia has been studied (Table XI). The pancreas from one animal was united by a vascular union with the neck blood vessels of another dog which had been pancreatectomized for 20 hours. The time necessary to reduce the blood sugar level to 120 mg.

Intra-islet GLP-1, but not CCK, is necessary for β-cell function in mouse and human islets [PDF]
Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and cholecystokinin (CCK) are gut-derived peptide hormones known to play important roles in the regulation of gastrointestinal motility and secretion, appetite, and food intake.

Calmodulin and insulin secretion [PDF]
It is clear that calcium ions are of considerable importance as a second messenger in insulin secretion. There is increasing evidence that calmodulin, a ubiquitous intracellular regulatory protein that mediates calcium-dependent processes, has a fundamental role in stimulus-secretion coupling.

E-cadherin and cell adhesion: a role in architecture and function in the pancreatic islet [PDF]
Background/Aims: The efficient secretion of insulin from beta-cells requires extensive intra-islet communication. The cell surface adhesion protein epithelial (E)-cadherin (ECAD) establishes and maintains epithelial tissues such as the islets of ...

Aspects of insulin secretory mechanisms and models of diabetogenic B cell damage are discussed. Measurements of fluxes of 3H-labelled triphenylmethylphosphonium ion, 86Rb+, 42K+, 22Na+, and 45Ca2+ in isolated islets indicate that the triggering of insulin release depends on alterations in the interaction of ions with the B cells.

Insulin-like growth factor-1 is a negative modulator of glucagon secretion [PDF]
Glucagon secretion involves a combination of paracrine, autocrine, hormonal, and autonomic neural mechanisms. Type 2 diabetes often presents impaired glucagon suppression by insulin and glucose.

Deoxysugars and Insulin Secretion
It has been shown that a deoxysugar, D(+)-digitoxose, inhibits glucose-induced insulin release without inhibiting the glucose oxidation rates of the islets. In the present study the effect on insulin release of several other common deoxysugar (L-fucose, D-fucose, L-rhamnose, 2-deoxy-D-galactose and 2-deoxy-D-ribose) was investigated. We have found that

Catechol estrogens stimulate insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells via activation of the transient receptor potential A1 (TRPA1) channel [PDF]
Estrogen hormones play an important role in controlling glucose homeostasis and pancreatic β-cell function. Despite the significance of estrogen hormones for regulation of glucose metabolism, little is known about the roles of endogenous estrogen ...

Measuring β-cell function in vivo to understand the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes [PDF]
Diabetes arises when insulin secretion is inadequate for the prevailing metabolic conditions. As such appropriate measurement of β-cell function is necessary for a better understanding of the pathophysiology of prediabetes and diabetes.
