The contrasting effects of two antimalarial drugs on insulin secretion [PDF]
Quinolines and artemisinins are the two most important antimalarial drugs worldwide. In addition to antimalarial effects, quinine has been extensively documented to directly stimulate insulin secretion, potentially causing hypoglycemia in malaria ...

Introduction It is increasingly recognized that type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogenous disease with ethnic variations. Differences in insulin secretion, insulin resistance and ectopic fat are thought to contribute to these variations.

Objectives: Pancreatic beta cells secrete insulin postprandially and during fasting to maintain glucose homeostasis. Although glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) has been extensively studied, much less is known about basal insulin secretion. Here,

Aspects of insulin secretory mechanisms and models of diabetogenic B cell damage are discussed. Measurements of fluxes of 3H-labelled triphenylmethylphosphonium ion, 86Rb+, 42K+, 22Na+, and 45Ca2+ in isolated islets indicate that the triggering of insulin release depends on alterations in the interaction of ions with the B cells.

European lipodystrophy registry: background and structure
Background Lipodystrophy syndromes comprise a group of extremely rare and heterogeneous diseases characterized by a selective loss of adipose tissue in the absence of nutritional deprivation or catabolic state. Because of the rarity of each lipodystrophy

Exploring mechanisms of insulin secretion regulators using C. elegans [PDF]
Diabetes mellitus is a group of disorders characterized by disrupted glucose homeostasis. Diabetes is one of the most dangerous diseases worldwide since it affects currently more than 500 million people. The pathogenesis of the disease is associated with

Deoxysugars and Insulin Secretion
It has been shown that a deoxysugar, D(+)-digitoxose, inhibits glucose-induced insulin release without inhibiting the glucose oxidation rates of the islets. In the present study the effect on insulin release of several other common deoxysugar (L-fucose, D-fucose, L-rhamnose, 2-deoxy-D-galactose and 2-deoxy-D-ribose) was investigated. We have found that

Calmodulin and insulin secretion [PDF]
It is clear that calcium ions are of considerable importance as a second messenger in insulin secretion. There is increasing evidence that calmodulin, a ubiquitous intracellular regulatory protein that mediates calcium-dependent processes, has a fundamental role in stimulus-secretion coupling.

Loss of AMP-activated protein kinase alpha 2 subunit in mouse beta-cells impairs glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and inhibits their sensitivity to hypoglycaemia [PDF]
AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) signalling plays a key role in whole-body energy homoeostasis, although its precise role in pancreatic beta-cell function remains unclear.

The calcium-sensing receptor and insulin secretion : a role outside systemic control 15 years on [PDF]
In the 15 years since the identification and characterisation of the extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaR), it has become increasingly apparent that this cationic binding receptor is found in many tissues, not associated with the control of plasma
