The power of microRNA regulation—insights into immunity and metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
MicroRNAs are emerging as crucial regulators at the intersection of metabolism and immunity. This review examines how miRNAs coordinate glucose and lipid metabolism while simultaneously modulating T‐cell development and immune responses. Moreover, it highlights how cutting‐edge artificial intelligence applications can identify miRNA biomarkers ...

Innate Immune Sensing of Viruses and Its Consequences for the Central Nervous System

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Viral infections remain a global public health concern and cause a severe societal and economic burden. At the organismal level, the innate immune system is essential for the detection of viruses and constitutes the first line of defense.

Analysis of Hepatitis C Viral Dynamics Using Latin Hypercube Sampling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We consider a mathematical model comprising of four coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs) for studying the hepatitis C (HCV) viral dynamics. The model embodies the efficacies of a combination therapy of interferon and ribavirin. A condition for the stability of the uninfected and the infected steady states is presented.

Type I interferons in host defence and inflammatory diseases

open access: yesLupus Science and Medicine, 2019
Type I interferons (IFN) can have dual and opposing roles in immunity, with effects that are beneficial or detrimental to the individual depending on whether IFN pathway activation is transient or sustained.

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Poly I:C Pre-Treatment Induced the Anti-Viral Interferon Response in Airway Epithelial Cells

open access: yesViruses, 2023
Type I and III interferons are among the most important antiviral mediators. Increased susceptibility to infections has been described as being associated with impaired interferon response in asthmatic patients. In this work, we focused on the modulation

GIFT: Guided and Interpretable Factorization for Tensors - An Application to Large-Scale Multi-platform Cancer Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Given multi-platform genome data with prior knowledge of functional gene sets, how can we extract interpretable latent relationships between patients and genes? More specifically, how can we devise a tensor factorization method which produces an interpretable gene factor matrix based on gene set information while maintaining the decomposition quality ...

Cellular liquid biopsy provides unique chances for disease monitoring, preclinical model generation and therapy adjustment in rare salivary gland cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We quantified and cultured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of 62 patients with various cancer types and generated CTC‐derived tumoroid models from two salivary gland cancer patients. Cellular liquid biopsy‐derived information enabled molecular genetic assessment of systemic disease heterogeneity and functional testing for therapy selection in both ...

Interferons—Implications in the Immune Response to Respiratory Viruses

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2023
Interferons (IFN) are an assemblage of signaling proteins made and released by various host cells in response to stimuli, including viruses. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza virus, and SARS-CoV-2 are major causes of respiratory disease that ...

Type I interferons instigate fetal demise after Zika virus infection

open access: yesScience immunology, 2018
After Zika virus infection, fetal type I interferon signaling is responsible for abnormal placental development and fetal resorption. The interferon boomerang Interferon-α/β receptor (IFNAR)–deficient mice are highly susceptible to viruses, including ...
