Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology, 1987
Monocyte functions, including interleukin 1 (IL-1) production, have been shown previously to be impaired in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We have fractionated culture supernatants from unstimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to determine whether the low IL-1 activity in AIDS was due to the presence of IL-1 inhibitors.

Native interleukin 1 inhibitors
Immunology Today, 1989Much information has accumulated on the isolation and characterization of a heterogeneous group of molecules that inhibit one or more of the bioactivities of interleukin 1. In this review James Larrick discusses the biological and biochemical data available on several of these native interleukin 1 inhibitors, some of which have additional, unexpected ...

Characterization of a human interleukin 1 inhibitor.
The Journal of Immunology, 1985Abstract Human urine contains a specific inhibitor of interleukin 1 (IL 1) that is found in increased amounts during fever. This inhibitor was purified by using a sequence of ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE cellulose ion-exchange chromatography, molecular sieve chromatography on Sephacryl S-200, affinity chromatography on ...

Archives of Oral Biology, 1989
This study examined the effect of the putative periodontopathic bacteria Bacteroides gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum on the production of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-1 inhibitors by human plastic-adherent mononuclear cells from normal donors. Fusobacterium mortiferum was used as a non-oral, non-pathogenic control organism.

Interleukin 1, but not Interleukin 1 Inhibitor, is Released from Human Monocytes by Immune Complexes
Scandinavian Journal of Immunology, 1990Immune complexes (IC) are believed to play a role in the pathogenesis of some autoimmune diseases in which interleukin 1 (IL‐1) and probably other cytokines also take part. This investigation shows that tetanus toxoid human anti‐tetanus toxoid IC induce human monocytes to release IL‐1. The activity was identified as being mainly IL‐1β by molecular size

Fetal bovine serum contains an inhibitor of interleukin-1
Journal of Immunological Methods, 1990The keratinocyte cell line COLO-16 constitutively produces factors with interleukin-1 (IL-1) activity including IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta. IL-1 activity assayed by thymocyte proliferation from cell supernatants was 20-50% less if cells were maintained in media containing 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) compared to media without serum 24 h prior to harvest.

Mechanism of action of a human interleukin 1 inhibitor
Cellular Immunology, 1987The urine of febrile humans contains a 30- to 35-Kda glycoprotein (febrile inhibitor) that inhibits interleukin 1 (IL-1)-induced proliferation of murine thymocytes. In the present investigation, the mechanism of action of this febrile inhibitor was analyzed.

The “two-headed” peptide inhibitors of interleukin-1 action
Peptides, 2000Two peptide fragments of IL-1 family proteins, ITGSE and VTKFYF compete with IL-1 for the cellular receptor. We synthesized a series of peptides composed of the sequences ITGSE and VTKFYK bound directly to each other or connected by such linkers as (Gly)(n), L- and D-Pro residues, Glu and Lys residues (with peptide bond formed by main amino and carboxy

Role of Interleukin-1 Inhibitors in Osteoarthritis
Drugs & Aging, 2012Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common chronic musculoskeletal disease, represents a leading cause of disability in the elderly population worldwide. At present, there is no aetiological treatment for OA patients. Also, current therapeutic regimens for OA are only partially effective, and that is the main reason for most physicians' complaints. Therefore,

Detection of interleukin-1 signal transduction inhibitors: Action of protein kinase inhibitors
International Journal of Immunopharmacology, 1995The dysregulated production of IL-1 has been shown to play an important role in many pathological processes. Despite the apparent value of compounds able to inhibit either the secretion of IL-1 or its signal transduction pathway in a specific manner, there are no such compounds suitable for clinical use.
