Fewer Islets Survive from a First Transplant than a Second Transplant: Evaluation of Repeated Intraportal Islet Transplantation in Mice

open access: yesCell Transplantation, 2019
Beta cell replacement is an exciting field where new beta cell sources and alternative sites are widely explored. The liver has been the implantation site of choice in the clinic since the advent of islet transplantation. However, in most cases, repeated

Amniotic Membrane Extract Protects Islets From Serum-Deprivation Induced Impairments and Improves Islet Transplantation Outcome

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2020
Islet culture prior to transplantation is a standard practice in many transplantation centers. Nevertheless, the abundant islet mass loss and function impairment during this serum-deprivation culture period restrain the success of islet transplantation ...

The liver surface as a favorable site for islet cell sheet transplantation in type 1 diabetes model mice

open access: yesRegenerative Therapy, 2018
Introduction: Islet transplantation is one of the most promising therapeutic approaches for patients with severe type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Transplantation of engineered islet cell sheets holds great potential for treating T1DM as it enables the ...

Clinical Significance of Therapeutic Drug Level Monitoring for Mycophenolate in Patients With Extrarenal Systemic Lupus Erythematosus—A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Clinical response to mycophenolic acid (MPA) is highly heterogeneous; thus, therapeutic drug level monitoring (TDM) may help improve treatment efficacy. This systematic review and meta‐analysis examined therapeutic ranges for MPA levels associated with better outcomes and safety in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE ...

Comparison of the Effects of Liraglutide on Islet Graft Survival Between Local and Systemic Delivery

open access: yesCell Transplantation, 2020
Islet transplantation has emerged as a promising treatment for type 1 diabetes mellitus. Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, protects beta cells after islet transplantation by improving glycemic control through several ...

Beneficial effect of insulin treatment on islet transplantation outcomes in Akita mice. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Islet transplantation is a promising potential therapy for patients with type 1 diabetes. The outcome of islet transplantation depends on the transplantation of a sufficient amount of β-cell mass. However, the initial loss of islets after transplantation

Probucol Pharmacological and Bio-Nanotechnological Effects on Surgically Transplanted Graft Due to Powerful Anti-Inflammatory, Anti-Fibrotic and Potential Bile Acid Modulatory Actions

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2021
Introduction. A major obstacle in islet transplantation and graft survival pre and post transplantation is islet apoptosis due to mainly inflammatory bio molecules released during islet harvesting and post graft transplantation and hence, subsequent ...

Tissue‐Stimulator Platform for Electrically Stimulating Pancreatic β‐Cells for Long‐Term Functional Regulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a tissue‐stimulator platform for seamless electrode integration with pancreatic tissue, applying uniform electrical stimulation through optimized design with biohybrid 3D printing. Advantageous effects of electrical stimulation on β‐cell function were observed, including enhanced calcium signaling, islet morphology, and maturation.

A primer on contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging of post‐procedural and follow‐up imaging of islet cell transplant

open access: yesNano Select, 2023
β‐islet cell transplantation is a promising proposed treatment for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) which can provide more physiological glucose control when compared to exogenous insulin therapy and reverse secondary consequences of diabetes ...

Development of Nanoflare Nanosensors for Monitoring Cellular Insulin mRNA in Beta Cells and Islets

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study presents the design and application of In2‐NF probes for detecting insulin mRNA in beta cells and islets. Using spherical nucleic acid‐coated gold nanoparticles, the probes offer strong fluorescent signals upon hybridization. Their performance is validated across 2D and 3D cultures and rat islets, demonstrating sensitive, real‐time mRNA ...
