Water‐Soluble Molecular Wires for Membrane Potential Imaging
Fully water‐soluble fluorescent rosamine‐based amphiphilic molecular wires were developed for imaging membrane potentials. The performance of the probes was evaluated in single cardiomyocytes, murine pituitary gland, and islets of Langerhans.

The ‘Islets of Langerhans’ of the pancreas. [PDF]
These structures were first described by Langerhans in 1869. They have since been found by many observers in the pancreas of every species of mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian in which they have been looked for. Kühne and Lea first recognised the peculiarly rich plexus of wide blood-capillaries in the islets.

Insulin Treatment of Mice Recipients Preserves β-Cell Function in Porcine Islet Transplantation
Encapsulation of islets of Langerhans confers protection against cell-mediated immune destruction and so should allow the transplantation of islets without immunosuppression.

Aim: Islets of Langerhans are more sensitive to oxidative damage because of their low antioxidant capacity. In diabetes, methylglyoxal (MG) accumulates in the pancreas.

Transplantation or islets of Langerhans: new developments
The clinical results recently reported by the Edmonton group in recipients of allogeneic islet grafts, all of whom achieved at least temporary insulin independence, has rekindled interest in transplantation of islets of Langerhans as a means to cure diabetes.

Entrapment of Cultured Pancreas Islets in Three-Dimensional Collagen Matrices
In vitro culture of islets of Langerhans decreases their immunogenecity, presumably by eliminating passenger leukocytes and other Ia+ presenting cells within the islets.

Considering the fact, that pancreatic beta cells are responsible for production of all insulin needed to maintain the glucose homeostasis, the problem of beta cells pull control in patients with hypertension is rather topical.
