From Lymphotoxin to Tertiary Lymphoid Structures and Beyond

open access: yesImmunological Reviews, Volume 335, Issue 1, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Lymphoid organ development occurs in ontogeny in the absence of antigenic stimulation; inflammation occurs after some immunological insult. These subjects had originally been considered as separate fields of research. Inflammation is due to inflammatory mediators such as lymphotoxin (LT) and its close relative, tumor necrosis factor (TNF). The

Pancreatic Islet Cell Hormones: Secretion, Function, and Diabetes Therapy

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 6, Issue 9, September 2025.
The pancreatic islets, composed of α, β, δ, ε, and PP cells, play a central role in maintaining glucose homeostasis. This review examines the mechanisms of islet hormone secretion and their functional crosstalk networks, alongside the pathophysiology of diabetes driven by hormonal dysregulation.

Human mesenchymal stem cells improve rat islet functionality under cytokine stress with combined upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 and ferritin

open access: yesStem Cell Research & Therapy, 2019
Background Islets of Langerhans transplantation is a promising therapy for type 1 diabetes mellitus, but this technique is compromised by transplantation stresses including inflammation.

Modeling Genetic Risk of β‐Cell Dysfunction in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells From Patients Carrying the MTNR1B Risk Variant

open access: yesJournal of Pineal Research, Volume 77, Issue 5, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Disruptions in circadian rhythm, partly controlled by the hormone melatonin, increase the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Accordingly, a variant of the gene encoding the melatonin receptor 1B (MTNR1B) is robustly associated with increased risk of T2D.

The Effects of Probiotics Consumption on Blood Pressure, Lipid Profile, Glycemic Indices, and Inflammatory Parameters in Overweight and Obese Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 8, August 2025.
This systematic review and meta‐analysis of 26 randomized controlled trials involving 1755 overweight or obese adults demonstrated that probiotics provide small but statistically significant improvements in diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and C‐reactive protein levels.

Human islet transplantation - state of the art [PDF]

open access: yesEinstein (São Paulo), 2005
Currently, only vascularized pancreas transplantation can reestablishlong-term normoglycemia but the scenario has beenassociated with significant morbidity and mortality.

Encapsulation of Langerhans' islets: Microtechnological developments for transplantation

open access: yesEngineering in Life Sciences, 2011
AbstractThere is an increasing trend to apply microsystems and microfluidics to solve medical and biomedical tasks. Microfluidic modules are used to modify and manipulate cells and cell clusters for therapeutic applications. Specifically, a method and technical system for encapsulation of Langerhans' islets as an option for the future treatment of ...

The Islet Size to Oxygen Consumption Ratio Reliably Predicts Reversal of Diabetes Posttransplant

open access: yesCell Transplantation, 2012
β-Cell replacement therapy by either whole-organ pancreas or islets of Langerhans transplantation can restore carbohydrate control to diabetic patients and reduces complications associated with the disease.

Intraocular in vivo imaging of pancreatic islet cell physiology/pathology

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism, 2017
Background: Diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions and requires new strategies for treatment. Unfortunately, the efficacy of treatment regimens on maintaining/re-gaining functional beta cell mass can, at the present, only be determined ...

Detection and Isolation of Tissue‐Specific Extracellular Vesicles From the Blood

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Biology, Volume 4, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanosized, membrane‐bound particles released by virtually all cell types, serving as messengers within tissues and across organs via the bloodstream. EVs encapsulate diverse molecular cargo that reflects the phenotypic state of their originating cells, making them promising candidates for liquid biopsy ...
