Kinesin-5 Is Dispensable for Bipolar Spindle Formation and Elongation in Candida albicans, but Simultaneous Loss of Kinesin-14 Activity Is Lethal

open access: yesmSphere, 2019
Mitotic spindles assume a bipolar architecture through the concerted actions of microtubules, motors, and cross-linking proteins. In most eukaryotes, kinesin-5 motors are essential to this process, and cells will fail to form a bipolar spindle without ...

Lipid Droplet‐Localized Spindle Apparatus Coiled‐Coil Protein 1 Regulates Lipid Droplet Distribution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
SPDL1‐L, a long isoform of SPDL1, is identified as a bona fide lipid droplet‐associated protein that acts as a dynein adaptor to drive perinuclear clustering of lipid droplets. By linking lipid droplets to the microtubule network, SPDL1‐L extends the function of SPDL1 beyond mitosis and contributes to lipid droplet organization and nuclear remodeling ...

Competition between kinesin-1 and myosin-V defines Drosophila posterior determination

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Local accumulation of oskar (osk) mRNA in the Drosophila oocyte determines the posterior pole of the future embryo. Two major cytoskeletal components, microtubules and actin filaments, together with a microtubule motor, kinesin-1, and an actin motor ...

Oncogenic role of kinesin proteins and targeting kinesin therapy

open access: yesCancer Science, 2013
The kinesin superfamily (KIF) is a group of proteins that share a highly conserved motor domain. Except for some members, many KIF proteins have adenosine triphosphatase activity and microtubule‐dependent plus‐end motion ability. Kinesins participate in several essential cellular functions, including mitosis, meiosis and the transport of macromolecules.

Chloroplast Stress Signals Orchestrate Epidermis‐Specific Remodeling of Mitochondria and ER Under High Light

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
High light exposure triggers an epidermis‐specific remodeling of mitochondria and ER in Arabidopsis, driven by chloroplast‐derived signals. Live‐cell imaging shows that HL rapidly suppresses mitochondrial motility, followed by fusion‐driven elongation and ER cisternal expansion.

Granule-Dependent NK Cell Killing of Cryptococcus Requires Kinesin to Reposition the Cytolytic Machinery for Directed Cytotoxicity

open access: yesCell Reports, 2018
Summary: Cryptococcus is the most important cause of fungal meningitis in immunocompromised individuals. Host defense against Cryptococcus involves direct killing by NK cells.

Aspergillus myosin-V supports polarized growth in the absence of microtubule-based transport. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
In the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, both microtubules and actin filaments are important for polarized growth at the hyphal tip. Less clear is how different microtubule-based and actin-based motors work together to support this growth. Here we

Mitotic Kinesins: A Reason to Delve into Kinesin-12 [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2014
The failure of kinesin-targeting cancer drugs is thought to result from functional redundancy of mitotic kinesins. A new study provides mechanistic insights into kinesin-12 that help to explain its targeting to kinetochore fibers and its ability to compensate for inhibition of kinesin-5.

NuSAP Safeguards Centriole Integrity to Mediate CEP57‐CEP152 Torus Recruitment for Proper Engagement

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reveals a novel role for the microtubule stabilizer NuSAP at centrioles. NuSAP depletion destabilizes the centriole's tubulin structure, causing premature disengagement, PCM defects, and mis‐localization of the CEP57‐CEP63‐CEP152 complex. By reinforcing centriole architecture, NuSAP enables early CEP57 loading and initiates a newly proposed ...

On the motion of kinesin in a viscoelastic medium

open access: yes, 2017
Kinesin is a molecular motor that transports cargo along microtubules. The results of many {\it in vitro} experiments on kinesin-1 are described by kinetic models \cite{Clancy11} in which one transition corresponds to the forward motion and subsequent ...
