Copolymerization of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Monomers in Water Assisted by Cyclodextrins

Make it soluble! The formation of inclusion complex between cyclodextrins and a hydrophobic monomer derived from cholic acid improves its solubility in water and allows a successful copolymerization with acrylamide in water. The resulting polymer shows a UCST behavior in water.

The core of the anti‐viral troponoid natural product liriosmaside A lacking the 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaric acid (HMGA) side‐chain at C6′ has been prepared. The early steps involved the gem‐dibromocyclopropane‐mediated ring‐expansion of a readily‐obtained Robinson annulation product.
