Leaving a Legacy

open access: yesVoices in Bioethics, 2015
End of Life (EoL) care has expanded into a vital component of medical practice, as patients and their providers partake in pertinent discussions before it is too late. These efforts have historically focused largely on the geriatric population, leaving out the younger patients whose needs must also be considered. Each year, more than 11,000 adolescents

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Composition and content of fatty acids in Vitis vinifera L. var. Cabernet Sauvignon leaves infected with the eutypiosis fungus, Eutypa lata

open access: yesOENO One, 1998
On Cabernet sauvignon, eutypiosis sensible variety, we have compared fatty acids content in healthy Jeaves (S: leaves beared by healthy vine stock), in leaves seeming healthy (Ap.S: leaves beared by arm without symptoms, the other arm is diseased) and in

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Incident light orientation lets C4 monocotyledonous leaves make light work differently

open access: yes, 2008
Photosynthesis is an important driver of ecosystem sustainability in the face of climate change. Monocotyledonous crop species with C4 photosynthesis such as maize (Zea mays L; corn) and sugar cane are crucial for future food security and biofuel crop ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.
