Concentrations of the hormone leptin, which is produced by adipose tissue, increase with increasing BMI, whereas leptin sensitivity often declines with higher BMI.

Leptin is a 167 amino acid hormonal protein product of the obesity gene that has been widely studied since its discovery by Zang et al . (1994). Initially described as being involved with satiety and energy balance, leptin was proposed to be the anti-obesity factor involved in a feedback loop from the adipocyte to the hypothalamus (Zang et al ., 1994).

In vivo and ex vivo regulation of visfatin production by leptin in human and murine adipose tissue : role of mitogen-activated protein kinase and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase signaling pathways [PDF]
Visfatin is an adipogenic adipokine with increased levels in obesity, properties common to leptin. Thus, leptin may modulate visfatin production in adipose tissue (AT).

Differences in zinc status and the leptin axis in anorexic and recovered adolescents and young adults : a pilot study [PDF]
Background: Evidence from animal studies suggests that leptin metabolism is associated with zinc (Zn) status. However, research investigating this relationship in adolescents and young adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) is scarce; the present study aims ...

Leptin resensitisation: a reversion of leptin-resistant states [PDF]
Leptin resistance refers to states in which leptin fails to promote its anticipated effects, frequently coexisting with hyperleptinaemia. Leptin resistance is closely associated with obesity and also observed in physiological situations such as pregnancy and in seasonal animals.

Obesity and the ageing brain : could leptin play a role in neurodegeneration? [PDF]
Obesity and ageing are both characteristics of the human population that are on the increase across the globe. It has long been established that ageing is the major risk factor for neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, and it is ...

The Neuronal Actions of Leptin and the Implications for Treating Alzheimer’s Disease
It is widely accepted that the endocrine hormone leptin controls food intake and energy homeostasis via activation of leptin receptors expressed on hypothalamic arcuate neurons.

A theory that predicts behaviors of disordered cytoskeletal networks
Morphogenesis in animal tissues is largely driven by actomyosin networks, through tensions generated by an active contractile process. Although the network components and their properties are known, and networks can be reconstituted in vitro, the ...
