The absorption and transport of lipids by the small intestine

Brain Research Bulletin, 1991
Dietary lipid provides as much as 40% of the caloric intake in the Western diet. Triacylglycerol is the main dietary fat. The human small intestine is also presented daily with 11-12 g of phospholipid, predominantly phosphatidylcholine. The predominant sterol in the Western diet is cholesterol, which is derived from animal fat.

Effects of aging on intestinal lipid absorption

American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1993
Because of the "graying" of the population there is increasing interest in age-related changes in organ physiology. Impairment of lipid absorption, if present, could lead to malnutrition in the elderly while increased uptake of cholesterol could contribute to the rise in serum cholesterol levels seen in older individuals.

Lipid Absorption and Intestinal Lipoprotein Formation

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine, 1981
Lipid absorption is a complex process which involves coordinated gastric, intestinal, biliary and pancreatic function. Emulsification of dietary lipid occurs in the stomach and upper intestine where a series of enzymic events also occur. Phospholipids are digested by phospholipases.

Lipid absorption in newborn rat intestine

Developmental Biology, 1977
Abstract There appear to be three distinct regions of cellular maturation within the newborn intestinal epithelium. As crypt cells move onto the lower villus surface, they become transition cells which in turn differentiate into mature villus-absorptive cells. In order to study lipid absorption in cells of each region, proximal segments of intestines

Digestion and Absorption of Lipids

2018
Lipids are important source of energy for living organisms. A healthy adult person requires around 2800 calories per day. It is recommended that around 20–35% of daily calories should be furnished by dietary lipids. Calorific value of fats is (9 calories/g). An adult person should consume around 60–90 g of fats per day.

THE ROLE OF MICELLAR SOLUBILIZATION IN LIPID ABSORPTION

Australian Journal of Experimental Biology and Medical Science, 1972
SummaryResults with everted sacs, in vitro, suggest that lipid uptake is limited by diffusion across an unstirred aqueous layer adjacent to the cell membrane. This step is facilitated by micellar solubilization. There is a linear relation between uptake and concentration of solubilized fatty acid.
