Bona Fide Intersegmental Plane Hepatectomy Along the Glissonean Branches (BIPHG)

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This review traces the author's personal journey over three decades in the evolution of liver resection techniques, culminating in the proposal of the Bona Fide Intersegmental Plane Hepatectomy Along Glissonean Branches (BIPHG). Beginning with pioneering experiences in laparoscopic and robotic liver surgeries, the author highlights key ...

Recent advances on the mechanisms regulating cholangiocyte proliferation and the significance of the neuroendocrine regulation of cholangiocyte pathophysiology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cholangiocytes are epithelial cells lining the biliary epithelium. Cholangiocytes play several key roles in the modification of ductal bile and are also the target cells in chronic cholestatic liver diseases (i.e., cholangiopathies) such as PSC, PBC ...

Robotic Versus Laparoscopic Anatomic Liver Resection: Comparison of Perioperative Outcomes—A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Minimally invasive anatomic liver resection (AR) including major hepatectomy and liver parenchyma‐sparing AR is technically complex and demanding. This systematic review with meta‐analysis including 15 studies comparing 2042 robotic AR and 2129 laparoscopic AR patients demonstrated largely comparable perioperative outcomes and partly better outcomes ...

Preoperative Total Iron‐Binding Capacity Is a Novel Surrogate Marker of Short‐ and Long‐Term Outcomes After Liver Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
HCC patients with low preoperative TIBC levels experienced significantly more frequent post‐hepatectomy complications. Furthermore, these patients were significantly correlated with worse survival. Preoperative serum TIBC levels may be a novel surrogate marker of postoperative complications and long‐term survival after hepatectomy.

Emergency Cholecystectomy in Patients Classified as High Risk According to the Tokyo Guidelines 2018: A Real‐World Analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Emergency cholecystectomy was evaluated in patients with acute cholecystitis classified as non‐recommended for surgery by the Tokyo Guidelines 2018. Major postoperative complications, rather than mortality, better reflected operative risk. Physiological instability, particularly ASA‐PS ≥ 3 and shock status, identified high‐risk patients, suggesting ...

The cumulative effects of known susceptibility variants to predict primary biliary cirrhosis risk. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Multiple genetic variants influence the risk for development of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). To explore the cumulative effects of known susceptibility loci on risk, we utilized a weighted genetic risk score (wGRS) to evaluate whether genetic ...

Impact of Recanalization on Liver Hypertrophy after Portal Vein Embolization and the Role of Re‐Embolization

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This retrospective study of 249 patients undergoing hepatectomy after right portal vein embolization (PVE) demonstrated that major recanalization–defined as recanalization more than one segment within the embolized liver–was associated with impaired regeneration of the future liver remnant (FLR).
